I have recently purchased a 42" panasonic hd television.and would like to add surrond sound to the set up.

At the same time I am thinking of buying a new hi fi(I have a kenwood stack system with mission speakers ,but wife thinks its too black and ugly now)I would like to know if I should keep the tv set up and the hi fi set seperate or should I try to bring them together.Any help would be appreciated.thanks in advance Tamdee

Well, if you watch DVDs or listen to multichannel music, then an HDTV is only 75% effective w/o surround sound. I'd definitely consider at least a 5.1 system, but as for suggestions, really depends on your budget and listening tastes. If you currently have a nice 2 channel hi fi set up, you may want to focus on that, and perhaps expand towards a 5.1 setup.
Thanks but is there a set up that I could put below my tv that would serve the purpose of a good music system and dvd player with the surround sound.excuse my ignorance but if I bought a really good a/v receiver and surround speakers(I have a panasonic dvd recorder...came with the tv)would this serve both purposes
Well, you could potentially use a speaker like the Yamaha YSP-1000 ( http://www.yamaha.com/yec/YSP1/idx_products.htm )

This would be a single speaker, you could place under the TV, that would give a surround sound environment with a single speaker. In order to get the full experience, you'd probably want to add as subwoofer as well.

However, if you want to take advantage of multichannel music, you'd want 5 discrete speakers (Left/Center/Right/Right Surround/Left Surround). And probably a subwoofer as well unless your 2 front speakers had really good bass extension.

For a good 2 channel music system, you'd want to get floorstanding full range speakers.
