Sony 34XBR960 iLink recording HD to PC

367 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bpt8056
Hi, I'm a newbie to HTPC, have a Sony 34XBR960 HD set for a while. Am told it's iLink port will send it's HD tuner's signal out. I want a simple set up to record HD and replay on my 960 TV. I don't mind using MCE and sound is not particularly important at this stage.

Is it worth the trouble to go HTPC or would a HD recorder like the Sony DHG-HDDxxx models (with yucky TVGuide) be better for just capturing and playing back HD content.

thanks.

Are you sure the 34XBR960 can output its own tuner on the firewire? I know there are recent Sony TVs like WS and XS series that can, but I think your model is from a time when Sony did not have that feature. In any case, this is the thread in the HDTV Recorders forum that discusses recording from firewire in XP. However, for HTPC use, if you can receive it on the XBR (it only has OTA tuner), you can receive it with a HDTV tuner in the PC. I would go that route.

Thanks for the post. A poster on the Sony 960 display thread says he is outputting thru his iLink to a Mac.

Is there a thread here on how to assemble a minimalist HTPC?,

all I want to do is input video (preferable HD) to a hard drive and play it back on my 960 TV. What is the minimum processor, RAM, hard drive space, inputs and outputs, software needed? I have read a lot of the faq threads but most are into more advanced systems.
Get a MacMini and use the Apple Firewire Tools. If you're starting from scratch and all you want to do is capture HD from your TV's internal tuner to a hard drive and play it back later, this is the way to go. The mac will not need to process the video because you would just send it out on the firewire for the TV to decode. Of course, user interface, WAF and remote control are issues that are not well addressed by this solution to my knowledge. Go read in the Mac HTPC forum and see if you think this will work well for you.

Small correction, the XBR has a digital tuner that is capable of the following:

• ATSC, NTSC

• 8 VSB

• QAM
