Sony 42" OLED ???

6082 Views 34 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  ed_in_tx
Has there been any info about a 43" Sony OLED TV? Seems I heard it was coming someday. I'd buy one today if it was available. Space limitations dictate this size. I would also want a new ATSC 3.0 tuner in it. Please advise!

Sure wish I could squeeze in the 48" as it's now down to the same price as my 40" Sony LCD I bought in 2008 and still in use today.

If it happens, it will likely be a 42". At CES, LG Display announced that they would be making 42" OLED panels this year. However, nobody has announced the release of a 42" OLED TV. I hope that both Sony and LG announce a 42" TV rather than someone using these panels to make 42" computer monitors.

I'll be very surprised if Sony goes with a 42". The smallest OLED in their 2021 lineup is 55". They made a 48" model in 2020. But not this year.

Unless Sony announces both a 48" and 42" model at the same time later this year, I think that the best chance of a 42" model this year is going to be from LG. I believe that there was some type of vague announcement, from LG Electronics, about a 42" OLED back in May. But IIRC, I don't think that they specifically said that they would be TV's. So, 42" computer monitors may still be a possibility (I hope not).

I don't know what LGE has said, but this is from the LG Display press release in January:

The company is set to strengthen its lineup by producing 83-inch and 42-inch OLED TV displays starting this year, adding to the existing 88-inch, 77-inch, 65-inch, 55-inch, and 48-inch OLED TV displays. It also plans to significantly expand its mid-range TV display lineup down to the 20-30-inch range

I think this could be interpreted that LG Display will begin the 42" panel production this year, with TV models not necessarily appearing until next year. But I do believe that we're going to see a 42" LG OLED TV model by next year. FWIW, LG also clarified to media that the mention of 20-30" TV panels referred to OLED panels.
We might find out some more info about 42 inches Aug 5th after market close at the earnings conf call of Universal Display.
Thanks for sharing those tidbits folks. I was planning to get a 43" Sony X85J later this year as a computer monitor, but this seems promising and worth waiting until next year for this supposed 42" LG OLED to hit the market.
There was a UDE2021 in China last month.
The 42" was still scheduled for the end of this year.
I hope all is well.

Here is the article that Vincent is referring to. I posted this in the C1/G1 Owner's thread yesterday. Very disappointing news for me.

According to the latest news, the 42" OLED panel from LG is supposed to come out next year sometime after demo at the 2022 CES.

Been waiting for the 42 inch model, and I hope it comes out soon in early 2022 then. I really hope they don't completely do away with the TV stand and go for the ugly feet instead for the 2022 models.
Thought I'd bump this up. Anyone hear of an ETA for a 42" Sony OLED?

I see the Sony 48" OLED sets are "on sale" for $1200 or so. Originally double that. Tempting...
Well! Looks like my wish is coming true! Are there any specs available for the XR-42A90K 42" yet?

Nope, that's only the A95K. The A90K uses WRGB panels from LG Display.

Oh man I need to re watch the video thing

sorta bizarre the 42 and 48 are a model number above the a80k that’s 55/65/77 seems odd

The 42 & 48" models are Master Series TV's. Sony considers them to be an extension of the A90J series. They are not part of the A80x series.

do these have the a90j brightness?

It's not possible due to the smaller pixel aperture ratio dictated by the smaller picture size (smaller pixels emit less light than bigger pixels do). The "guts" ("brains") of the TV are an A90x.
