Also, is it stupid to have the TV stick out over the stand? opinions please

On my E55A20, the base is about 39" wide and about 18" deep. Having the TV extend over the sides of the stand isn't stupid. Samsung, for example, has a DLP projection TV that comes with a pillar like stand, where the TV overlaps it.

I talked to about 5 people today about the stand and they all told me to stay away from glass. Reasons - it can break/crack easily and its hard to keep clean. are these accurate? How can a stand be rated for 260 lbs and not hold the weight?
