Oh OK. It would be worth upgrading for picture quality. The shield AI upscaler is awesome. As for sound, I cant answer, as I dont know what the TV is capable of. The shield audio settings are:
AV Sync
USB Audio mode
Play comfort noise on HDMI
Display volume control warning
Dolby Audio processing
Auto/Manual audio format output with these manual choices:
Dolby Atmos
AC3
E-AC3
DTS
DTS-HD
Dolby TrueHD
Stereo Upmix: Upmix stereo streams to 5.1 PCM (in case you are using a soundbar without that option)

Hope that helps.

If you are going to pirate anyway, why don’t download the 4K UHD files directly?

Who mentioned "pirate"?

I currently use my Sony A9G TV to stream Netflix, YouTube TV and copies of physical blu rays via Plex.

My system consists of

Sony A9G
Denon X3700H
RSL CG's LCR
Martin Logon Motion 4i as surrounds
RSL C34e for Dolby Atmos
PSA TV2112 sub

you don’t really understand how this works but you would need a physical UHD blu-ray drive and a PC to actually rip the discs..

you cannot even name the software to do this so let’s leave it at that
Both the Display and your AVR have eARC, so you'll be able to stream Lossless Audio (Dolby TrueHD/Atmos - - DTSMA/DTS-X). That would be a price saver since you would only have to worry about just 2 devices, as opposed to 3. Sony Display's are widely known to have great image and upscaling quality. You'll also be dealing with Android/Google TV as well. The Interface of these newer Sony Displays are comparable to the Shield's speed, so again, you won't be limited in any form or fashion.

Thought the same damn thing

More to the point, for what you're doing, earc to the receiver and using the built in apps on the tv would work perfectly. I would only consider picking up an external streaming device if I consistently ran into issue with the internal apps just to save frustration. I am doing pretty much the same as you are but with last years a8h.

Yes, earc from TV back to AVR.

There appears to be some differences in sound quality across different content on Netflix. I wondered if a Nvidia Shield would fix this.

I'm going to breathe some more life into my PC (i5, 12gb RAM) and stream from there into the AVR via HDMI to see if there's a difference.
