I don't claim to be an audiophile by any means, but I do appreciate quality and usually do research before I buy. With the exception of my Sony AVD-C70ES purchase, I trusted the Sony and ES name and decided to buy this unit because it seemed like the perfect fit. ES quality and a 5 disc changer in one space solved the limited space issue of my 40" XBR's stand.
Problem:
My initial problem was that subtitles would magically decide to come back on after a DVD layer change during a movie. Argh, annoying as that is it was superceded by the newest ES feature (I call them features - hehe): the screen goes black while watching a DVD. The movie still plays but you have a black screen to look at. That seems to occur on longer movies like Lord of the Rings: Two Towers.
Solutions:
While there is no 'fix' according to Sony for the subtitle problem. Sony said I can bring it to a service center and pay $219 to have it fixed. Hardly worth it for a receiver I paid $649 for. As for the 'Black Screen' feature, the only solution was to turn the receiver off then on.
I know this is a bit of a ***** session, but I'd like to warn potential owners. My step-dad owned a car dealership and he told me long ago to "never buy a first year car." I am living the lesson
I would love to hear from other owners to see if they have the same issues.
Thanks!
