I am so glad they fixed the HDMI audio problem. I couldn't use the rears in my 7.1 setup with the Sony on a 5.1 Blu Ray disc.

Now can we get some DTS HD??? With all of the FOX titles having it, I could care less about Dolby TruHD at the moment.
phansson, so what happens right now when you select DTS-HD and/or DTS-MA????

When I select it on my Samsung BD-P1000 you would never know it did not support it. I get PCM Multi-channel on the AVR via HDMI and it seems to sound really good.

I was just curious as to what it did on other players said to be without support for it was wll. I sure don't assert I am really getting anything beyond what they call DTS core, but it does sound really good.
Be aware that I could only get Power ISO to burn the image.... Sony specifically states it needs to be burned to a blank DVD not a CD. All of my burning software would reject the image if trying to burn it to a DVD+R. I heard that DVD Decrypter works but DVD FAB and DVD Shrink rejected it. Good luck
It plays it just fine. It is just the core DTS track. I do believe it is at a higher rate than a standard DTS DVD but it is still not coming out at 4mbps.

On my PS3, I believe it shows 1.5mbps output. It does sound good, but I want the whole lossless track. Sorry I am greedy....

Of course I could be wrong. Someone correct me if I am.
I would just like to confirm that the RESUME feature for power-off doesn't work with BD. I thought this was part of the update they said they were going to fix. It maybe me and just the excitement of the new update... but the response time of pressing a button on the remote to the player reacting seems to be faster??

I don't recall reading about any resume feature updates.

Use IMGBURN it free and works great but be sure to set the burning speed to 1X which is what Microsoft recommends. This is what I use to burn all my Microsoft MSDN ISO images to disc with.
Burned mine at 16x no problems.... just use high quality media... that has always been my rule... Verbatim FTW!!
If you do not have a DVD burner in your computer, please contact our customer call center at 866-909-7669 to have the update disc sent to you at no charge.
So what did the update do? DId it make all the SOny standalones BD-J fully capable?

"Dear BDP-S1 owner,

Congratulations on your purchase. We hope that you have been enjoying all the great high-definition Blu-ray Disc titles currently available, as well as the great picture quality the BDP-S1 provides for DVD playback.

A firmware upgrade is now available. As you have registered for this and future upgrades, Sony will be sending you an upgrade disc and installation guide (at no charge) approximately within the next three weeks by mail.

If you wish to download the firmware upgrade yourself, you may access it through the link below. By downloading the firmware upgrade at the following location and following the installation guide, you will quickly be able to enhance the performance your BDP-S1. More instructions and requirements will be detailed in the guide, but please make sure that your PC is equipped with a DVD burner and a compatible (blank) DVD DVD-R/RW disc close at hand (other types of recordable DVDs may work, but -R/RW is preferred).

Please click the following link to start the download process. If you'd like to learn more about the upgrade, please continue to read below.

Download upgrade

The firmware upgrade will make your BDP-S1 work better by

· Improving its BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs

· Enhancing playback compatibility with certain BD-ROM format discs

· Correcting the output signal status information for audio output and display when Linear PCM 5.1 channel soundtracks are played back via HDMI

Please carefully read the online installation guide - the steps are very simple but it's critical that you follow them to ensure that your upgrade goes smoothly.

We are also developing a second firmware upgrade which will allow you to playback BD R/RE discs (these are discs burned by a PC). As soon as we have a firm date for its release we will be notifying you via email at this address and sending out that upgrade disc as well.

Thanks again for choosing Sony and Blu-ray Disc.

Sincerely,

The Sony Blu-ray Disc Team "

Can you now get the back channels on 5.1 PCM using the PCM+ modes on your receiver?
Ok here are the findings after the update.

Menu is considerably faster than before. Good for Sony.

HDMI PCM output is now correct. 5.1 PCM is sent out 5.1 PCM. 7.1 PCM is sent out 7.1 PCM. Now I can apply post processing on 5.1 Blu Ray discs and get my rear channels. Very good Sony. This was one of my major problems with the BDP-S1.

Do not own Decent and didn't check the BD-J with Crank. I did use Crank to check the 7.1 LPCM signal though.

I also threw in X-Men The Last Stand just for blind luck. Still no DTS HDMA. BAD SONY!

Well, I am actually very happy with this first upgrade. I think that this is one of the most solid players on the market. I have not had any problems of freeze up issues or hard restarts. I guess I am lucky.

Just out of curiosity what firmware did you have before the update?

My player has v1.06
