SONY Blu-ray player is to be marketed in China

1585 Views 14 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  lgans316
it has been reported that Sony Blu-Ray player will enter Chinese mainland market. The specific release date is Jan. 24. As for the price, official suggestion is 4,990 RMB(equivelent to 665 USD). other details unknown.

As the Blu-ray player is massively released in China, HD-DVD obviously don't want to lag behind, the Chinese version of HD-DVD-----CH-DVD, will compete with Blu-ray in March. the predicted price will be lower than 3,000 RMB.

In China, a battle just begin.

Is that Blu-ray player compatible with the standard Blu-ray software Hollywood studios are selling?

As far as i'm concerned, Chinese Blur-ray player has international standard hardware and software, only differs in language and region code.

BTW, Chinese Blu-ray player is BDP-S300
I was in Hong Kong last Christmas. What I saw was: a lot of VCDs, many DVDs, several BDs imported from the US, a few HD DVDs (also from the US). This leads me to the following questions:

1. Has either HD format a higher chance of widespread adoption in China than in the US? (I think the chance of a widespread adoption of either format on the US is currently pretty low).

2. Will the price difference between HD DVD and BD play a major role?

3. Is China reason enough for Toshiba not to abandon HD DVD?

4. What about Europe?

1. I think you are dead wrong in your assesment of whether Blu-ray will catch on in the US. I am not sure of the current data, but I am sure that the US has a higher percent (and probably overall) number of HDTV sets in homes. With all the venom spewed around here due to the format war, the only think holding back widespread adoption of Blu-ray was the format war and lack of HDTVs in homes. By this time next year the format war will be long over and HDTV penetration will be higher, thus Blu-ray will be much closer to widespread adoption in the US. I see a good chance of widespread adoption of Blu-ray (but not quite as widespread as DVD at its peak).

2. I am not sure about content providers in China, but if HD-DVD has limited content like they do in the US, price will make no difference in China just as it hasn't made a difference in the US. Software price may make more of a difference in China...In the US I will happily pay 5-10 bucks more that the SD-DVD price, but would I pay basically the full price more or get the pirated SD-DVD copy for $1. HD-DVD currently does not have an advantage in software prices.

3. See question 2...IF Toshiba has enough content providers in China it may make a go of it, but I doubt they do.

4. HD-DVD has fared even worse in Europe against Blu-ray then they did in the states. Several European content providers are abandoning HD-DVD. Overall volumes are smaller in Europe than the US. I doubt Europe will help HD-DVD.

He's just being an @$$....he is implying that the Chinese can't even spell.
The Sony BDP-S1 and S300 are available in Hong Kong SAR. The S300 price was HK$4980 as of Dec. 2007 (about US$600-ish) so the price in mainland China is comparable.

Were you sold under the brand 'bigot'?
REGION CODING is a potential roadblock for penetration of Blu-ray in countries like India and China. 90% of the legally DVDs sold in India/China are imported from U.S, Singapore and Malaysia which come under REGION-1 and 3 respectively. India is REGION-5 and I am yet to see Hollywood movies marked with REGION-5. It's impossible for the Studios to control Indian and Chinese markets. The moment consumers find that the Blu-ray player is REGION LOCKED they are simply going to stay away from it. However the DVD rental industry in Asia is doing quiet well as there are no regulatory policies to restrict rental of movies that are neither unreleased nor to-be-released in the region.
India will be going HD-VMD, it maybe the only market that format takes off in.

China is another story, a off branded China made Blu-ray player that is cheap enough for the middle class can really take off.

and yes there are many hack mis spelled fake brands in China, just google white van speakers. i would not be surprised a Sorny brand is already in China, the laws governing brand names are very week. so almost spelled the same or almost sound the same brands come and go like crazy.
SONY recently launched BDP-S300 in India for a sweet $700.
