I'm looking at getting a blu-ray drive for my HTPC. But I see that the drive itself is a little different to most CD/DVD units, in that the drive door spans the full width of the drive.

I have a silverston LC11 case www.silverstonetek.com/products/lc11/lc11.html which requires the drive to install behind a false alloy door. This alloy door opening is only 137mm wide.

Can anyone comment on the fitment choices available here? Does the end of the draw unclip like most other drives? In which case I could possible remove it and even cut it a little smaller.

Any input from someone who has one of these would be great.

My other choice is to buy the Phillips model (not the liteon, as it doesn't handle DL BD!!) But I can't find anywhere that sells it at a "reasonable" price, and ships overseas ( I am in Australia)

The front of the drawer is really 145 mm, but the trey is 124 mm wide. I couldn't see any possible way to unclip the front. It is theoretically possible to cut it from both sides (you will lose the "S" from the "Sony" sign
), but I personally wouldn't perfor such an operation on a drive so expensive. I'd rather cut the PC case.

Well, it does have some slack, which may eventually mean you could be able to detach it somehow, but don't ask me to go all the way to try this
I don't know how it works with other drives, but it just doesn't come off easily with this one. Perhaps someone braver than me can attempt it...

ditcho, thanks. I've taken the plunge and ordered one anyway. Im confident it will unclip. If not I will cut it off!! But I don't think you could easily mould a tray in one piece, hence the clip on face.

I'll report my findings anyway. Just in case someone else want's to put one in a HTPC case.

Would installing the drive into an external case be a possibility?

I'm not sure if the drive is SATA, but there appear to be external cases to handle most interface standards now: ESATA, USB2, firewire.
