Sony CRT - Purple Discoloration at the Edge of the Screen

14812 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  raminolta
Hi

I've noticed a purple discoloration blob on the upper right edge of my Sony CRT (KV-34HS510). I've had the set for about 3 years, but this is the first time that I have noticed this problem. The blob is only really visible when there is a red background which casues the blob to show up as a light purple discoloration.

I do have a lot of electronic devices close to the set (PS3, tower speakers), but moving them unfortunatly, due to my cramped space, is not an option for me. If these devices are causing the problem is there another option or materials that I can use to sheild of offset the electronic interference?

Has any one else had any luck with fixing a problem like this? I have seen some similar posts talking about a "beam landing" setting in the service menu.

Thanks for your help!

The easiest fix will be moving the offending speaker or electronic gear. Unfortunately, the HS510s don't have service menu LANDING adjustments. Beam landing/color purity adjustments are made by adjusting the deflection yoke and purity controls on the tube neck and are fairly difficult to perform.
Thanks for your reply.

I've moved my PS3 to see if there will be any change. Hopefully the PS3 is the culprit -- the discoloration didn't go away right away, but I hope it will soon -- any idea how long these discolorations take to fade away (if they even go away at all?)

Also, I'm wondering if it makes sense for me to think that it is the PS3 that is causing the problem, or if anyone else has had similar problems with the PS3 and CRT TVs. Could it possibly have something to do with the wifi or the bluetooth?

I'm hesitant to think that it the speaker is causing the problem because I've had the speaker in the same position for the past 3 years without an issue.

Thanks for your help.

If it is a new issue, then it is likely caused by any new components moved near the set. Every time the set is powered on, you will hear a surging sound that is the result of the degaussing circuit energizing. The degauss circuit should, over a number of power cycles, remove the color purity remnants if the offending component has been moved. The degauss circuit will not energize within 5-10 minutes after a previous operation. Electronic components invariably have a transformer in their power supply. Transformers create magnetic fields, which can cause color impurity problems.
This is great information - thanks!

The PS3 is indeed the newest component to my setup. Hopefully the screen will get back to normal soon.

Thanks for your help.
Just wondering if you are seeing something similar to what I am..

see a similar thread I posted earlier this week.

Yeah, it does look a bit similar to the problem that I am seeing, except the discoloration that I am seeing remains the same size and shape and does not fluctuate. Also the pink/purple blob is only visible when there is a flesh color or red background. With a blue background I can not see it at all. Also the blob is on the upper middle of the side of the screen (like in your pictures) but it does not extend to the corners of the screen as it seems to be doing on your set.

I have moved what I think is the problem device and I am monitoring it closely to see if the discoloration subsides. It is hard to tell if there has been improvement yet, but I will give it some more time.

Have you had any luck?
cbsd-

Sounds like your problem is more a Landing issue. Bare in mind, I am no expert, I only speak from prior experience. A few years ago I had a blob of discoloration on the Lower Left side of my screen...I found a thread on here that discussed it and how to fix it. I followed the guys directions and it actually worked. If interested I can paste some simple instructions I followed for navigating the service menu to the Landing settings. ( I have it in a text file at home)

I tried searching for the original thread here, but I can't seem to navigate the archives that well.

As for my issue..no fix yet. I am at work and I have not done much trouble shooting yet...I have to respond to some questions in that thread actually.

Let me know...

According to a previous post, my model of tv doesn't have landing adjustments on its service menu, which would be unfortunate if it is the only way that it can be fixed beyond me having to get technician to look at it. For right now I'm hoping that it goes away on its own. We'll see. Thanks though.
Ahh, for some reason I was thinking we had the same television. Good luck man.
i had a similar problem, In my old apartment i had my powered sub right next to the TV. Now that i moved into a bigger place with a dedicated room the sub is much farther away and the problem stopped but it took a while for it to go. By the way i have a similar tv kV-36FS10
I have the 34" 910 and noticed what looks like the aptly described Green Blobs in my corners tonite. The TV is used for HD Cable viewing and PS3 gaming. I have an Infinity RSlllB right next to the TV which is not shielded and my PS3 is a couple of feet below the TV. Never had any problems with the Greenie issue until tonite.

My questions are: Is the problem fixable if I just move the speaker or does it require servicing. Who do you trust to fix this problem? Should I bother to call Sony about this? Is it worth fixing at this point after about 5 years of wear and tear on the TV? What should I expect to pay if I have to go the servicing route?

I love my Sony but don't want to throw money away if this problem is serious. Any suggestions/advice would be appreciated. I'm in Central NJ if that makes a difference

I would recommend you move any unshielded speakers at least a few feet away from the set. After a week of normal power on cycling, the automatic degaussing function should remove any residual magnetism. Good Luck
I was having similar problem with my CRT monitors showing discoloration at some corners. After reading this thread, I immediately noticed discoloration reappeared as soon as I plugged my Wacom tablet and it occurred at the corner of the screen that was closer to the tablet. I just moved the tablet away and in about 10 minutes, the discoloration disappeared.
