Sony D50: Box1040 or HDFury+Box1040?

1834 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  mp20748
Can anyone give me an idea of how much quality difference I'd notice between:

S550 > YpBpR > Box1040 > RGBHV > D50

vs

S550 > HDMI > HDFury > Box1040 > RGBHV > D50

D50 is limited to 1080i.

Thanks,

another suggestion:

S550-->IFB-FULLHD V2-->D50

IFB-FULLHD V2 has sharper image and true HDMI1.3 12bit color support. and 12bit video DAC. Hiend 1.5G opamp with gamma adjustment~
some D50's can accept component in directly so you might not need a transcoder to RGB . however I agree with Moome, if you can afford it ,the best way to go is skip all the analog cables and go direct HDMI to this
.

Thanks. I'd looked at that but general consensus seemed to be that it would be overkill for a D50 and not really provide any advantage over an HDFury>Box1040 or just Box1040. This also would have required me to run a 22' HDMI cable from the Equip Rack to the Proj (currently have RGBHV).

the IFB-FULLHD can support up to 30M hdmi cable, and it is only a true HDMI1.3 that support 12bit deep color, while other solution only HDMI1.1 support 8bit color.

it is the best for blueray that support deep color output.

here is the video chain that you can compare~

thanks

that's why I like the Moome cards so much, they are simple to connect and don't clutter up my already crowded equipment rack. You don't need any special power supply's, external gamma boosters, or RGB adapters.
If I had a G90 or even a G70 I'd go for a Moome in a heartbeat. I've got a D50 though and from everything I've heard the benefit over a Box1040 or FuryHD would be at best minimal on this proj. The Moome would be significantly more expensive (card is more plus extra cabling) and would require me to fish an HDMI cable from my rack to proj (22' run). I just don't see that it'd be worth it in this scenario. If I'm missing something please let me know.

Thanks.

Well, it isn't really that much more expensive. You need either the HDFury or the IFB-FULLHD card to be able to upscale standard DVDs and get around ICT if it's ever enabled (they're talking about doing it soon) so I don't really see *just* using the Box1040 as an option.

And then if you want gamma boost (and you do with all CRT Projectors) with the Hdfury1/2 you can add the Box1040. That'll also give you a second component input and switching. (I use HDfury2 into th RGB input for Blu-ray and the component input for HDTV).

Price then is very close. The IFB-FULLHD has considerably better specs too (discrete A/D converters, HDMI 1.3, etc) but whether you notice those differences on a D50 is questionable, so it's somewhat of a wash. But if you're thinking about upgrading to a G70 or G90 then I think the answer is more obvious.

In the end both are good solutions really (I've seen and used both). Frankly, I'm just happy we have choices!

There's Kim's RTC2200 as well instead of the Box1040. Both are excellent and very similar.

Here's a link to a comparison test where both devices were being used.

The results found from the comparison matched what I also found when I had both FuryII and Moome 1.3 here in my Marquee. Craig also found similar from his testing.

I think the advantage that the Moome has so far is built in gamma boost. Saying it has a shorter connection to the projector is irrelevant at that distance if the Fury is mounted at the projector.

Without a doubt, the Fury produced a sharper image at 1080P. No testing was done at lower resolutions.

A blend is the perfect instrument to conduct such a video shootout, as you can use one candidate in the left projector, and a second candidate in the right projector, and directly compare 2 separate candidates on the same image at exactly the same time. Having the highest bandwidth video chain (in a Home Theater) on the planet doesn't hurt either.

The results: the unmodded Moome HDMI 1.3 Marquee video input cards were the softest. My MP modded Moome HDMI 1.1 Marquee video input cards were slightly sharper. The unmodded HD Fury II was obviously the sharpest, and as an added bonus, displayed the more vibrant primary and secondary colors. Last night I ordered my own standard issue HD Fury II, from the Curt Palme website, of course.

My old primary video path had been HDMI (actually DVI) from the Blendzilla to the MP modded Moome HDMI 1.1 Marquee video input cards, with RGBHV analog as the backup. As soon as I revieve my HD Fury II, my primary video path will be all HDMI sources fed to the HD Fury II, then RGBHV through the Blendzilla and on to the projectors. The all HDMI video path to the MP modded Mooome HDMI 1.1 Marqee video input cards will become the backup video path. Aren't leapfrogging technology improvements a wonderful thingee!!!
