I've got a small projector room that measures roughly 5m long x 3.5m wide with a 1.1 gain screen located at one of the 3.5m ends.

The screen itself measures 2.2m x 2.0m and has a gain of 1.1

I already have a DVDO Ultrascan unit for line doubling and want to use the PJ for DVD, HTPC and potentially HDTV if I can.

I beleive the specs for both the D50 and Cine 7 seem to be roughly the same.

As it really is such a smaller type of room which do you guys thinks will best suit those above needs?

I looked through the "Best CRT PJ" list and saw the D50 mentioned but not the Cine7

The only main difference I can see that the Cine 7 has is the Iris auto lens, is the automatic covergence system really that good to warrant an almost $3k difference in price?

The PJ by the way will be front projection floor mounted in a hushbox to minimise ambient noise.

Thanks for any thoughts

A NEC PG will out preform either of these.

Cine7 is not much better than a 1272, and 5 times the price.

Auto convergence is unneeded, you can do it yourself it's not hard.

Thanks Mark,

Thought that the auto convergence was a lazy way of owing a DLP or LCD in CRT format :)

All brands of NEC or a specific few models?

Hey Ninja nice to see a felow crow eater!

I can definately say I have seen the D50 running and while its GREAT unit which personally I would recomend over a cine7, its not as sharp as a nec PG series unit if size is your issue.

I run a PG and wouldnt mind a D50 but they are a bit rarer and have ES focus tubes so as before not as sharp.

The Cine 7 should have a built-in Limo Pro unit as well if it is new. Which is an internal linemultiplier that can do [email protected]/60Hz or [email protected]/120Hz I beleive. It also has 2:2 and 3:2 and what not.

If you don't like noise don't choose NEC, only choose NEC if PQ is what you want. :D

But a Limo pro is pointless if Ninja77 goes with a HTPC, as mentioned.

Yes a Cine 7 is quiet, but it's only ES focus and they are stupidly expensive here. Cheap for a CRT new, but they just can't compete with a 2nd hand EM focus projector.

You can get a nice Sony G70 for the price Cine 7's tend to go for on E-bay here, if your lucky. There is just no comparison. (And stay away from E-bay Ninja77).

Noise is fixable with a hushbox. ES focus isn't.

I think mark just hit the nail on the head, get a G70! if you want big sharp bright images. Wait around a few months one will turn up (stay away from over the top ads on OZ ebay with lots of pretty pictures), For what the newer barco's get here you can do much better unless you have a great deal lined up.

From the spare parts / repairs point of view I would pick the sony anyday in Australia, oversea's how ever might be a different issue.

no point going for a 1250P scaler on a projector which might do 720P when dialed in extreemly well.

heh I didn't say the Cine 7 was the better choice. And they're over priced in the far north too. :)

Why look for for something in Australia, is it cheaper for you guys too to buy overseas?

Cheaper to import?

Yes and no. Depends on how patient you are when looking around here.

It can be heaps cheaper to import, if you take some risks.

It can be 3/4's the usual price if you go with a well-regarded reseller.

Or you can score a bargain locally.

Or it can go belly-up whichever way you go....

It's just luck, patience and connections ;)

No Marquees here (ok, maybe 3), but Sonys and NECs are common, and Barcos slightly less common, but around. Panasonic PTs seem a bit more common here than the US.

I have owned 8 CRT's now, and 5 of them cost less than the freight charge alone from LA in the US.

On the other hand, higher end units are quite rare and thus expensive here, as are the cine series.

Ninja im happy to chat about stuff drop me a PM I am local to you.

That's a bummer. For me it's cheaper to import than to buy local. No weird import tax on digital/video displays. or else they forgot to tax me for it ... twice. :D

Good points all round I see, jsp glad to see there is someone in Adelaide and will certianly pm you for a chat.

As for buying, there arent that many CRT sellers here that have a wide range and as Mark said what there is, is expensive. I only know of 1 in Sydney and they frequent Ebay, don't know of any others at all

Buying overseas appears to be the better option and freight is surprisingly cheap, around the $400-$500US mark for door to door via air, which I think is quite fair given the generic size and weight of CRTs

Noise isn't too much of an issue due to my homebuilt hushbox (turned out pretty good too, even the wife was impressed :) )

I was leaning away from the Cine 7, nice looking unit but again expensive here and what good are looks in a box?

There is a G70 with low hours in the US atm for less than the Cine7 bought here including freight so that might be the way to go, it seems to be a balance of PQ ease of setup and noise.

How about Marquee 8 series ,they're supposed to be easy to set up, reliable, modular, and there seems to be plenty marquee freaks around. :)

ps I don't like Sony. :D

There aren't any Marquees here Fred (yes, someone will pop up saying they have one, but they were never imported here officially AFAIK).

So your totally on your own, no local support, if you import a Marquee.

Ninja, yep, don't spend A$6000-7000 on something that is not much better than a A$1500-$2000 1272. D50 would be a better buy.

Don't go spending $4 or $5k on a Barco 800 either. Barco 808 is worth that maybe, but a PG Xtra is as good/better in some ways (colours) for less.

For $6000+ you can get a NEC XG or a Sony G70, if your patient.

Benny on this forum has some very nice PG Xtra units at ~$3500 to $4500 (don't quote me on that), and he might have an XG too. He's in Melbourne.

Maybe Gyzmo has a G70 in Sydney, not certain (he might be on holidays though).

Sorry Graham, I thought you had a 1292 for sale, and he implied he wanted something small. 1292s are for scaring wives....

To be fair I should mention Azzad in Perth too, not sure what he's got now either.

I have two Barco 808s's, a 1251, XG, and a PG9 with two new tubes. And two more Sony's on the way.

The last 1292 is GONE for the moment.

Thanks for all of this info guys, it is most helpful. Marks right I am after somthing that is relatively compact to a degree.

However PQ is high on the agenda so a wish list of compromising both PQ and PJ size would be ideal, if of course that is possible.

Graham, didn't know you sold these and would welcome a pm letting me know what you want for what you have and what you will be getting in.

BTW, Mark I have 2 units a Panasonic PT-106 and a Vidikron VPF-40
