First off, TCd stands for technologically challenged, which I very much am. I have a Sony STR DA4ES and while we were watching a game yesterday, my brother started dinking around with the remote to turn down the center channel speaker and increase the surround sound. I had the receiver set to PLII Movie (99% sure on that), and it typically selects the best signal for me, which for most HD channels was "Dolby Digital 5.1." NOW, I have it set to PLII Movie and when I change channels to what should be a 5.1 broadcast it shows "Dolby Digital 3/2.1" and I have no idea why. After pressing a million buttons last night, I can't get anything to select 5.1 DD. I should say I'm still hearing surround sound in all 7 speakers, but it is really freaking me out that 5.1 DD has disappeared.

Thanks in advance for any help!

15 views... no thoughts on what may have happened? I wish I had more info for you... if you can think of probing questions, by all means ask. What exactly is the difference between Dolby Digital 3/2.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1, and why might a system select DD 3/2.1 if 5.1 is available?

Is there a way to reset the system to begining modes? I'd have to reset a bunch of stuff (for example my Energy Encore speakers have a unique set up/wiring).

Everyone is probably a little confused because DD 3/2.1 is the same thing as DD 5.1.

Maybe you have just changed a setting that regulates how read-out indicates the different formats.

No difference. "3/2.1" means: 3 front channels, 2 surround channels and 1 LFE channel; for a total of 5.1 discrete channels.

Thanks for your responses. Not sure how or why it started displaying differently, but if 3/2.1 is the same as 5.1 no sense worrying about it.

This happened to me before. Make sure the receiever is not set to 6-speaker mode when you are in Dolby PLII. I have a DA5ES and I believe there is a button on the front of the receiver that says "6.1". I believe you can keep it on 6-speaker mode when you use the Sony Cinema A/B (I forget exactly what it is called) because those modes create a phantom, 6th speaker.

Give it a try and let us know if that works.
