I'm pretty well versed in modern electronics, but is DRC a type of scaler, or up conversion?. if so how is it same or differ from others? the manual is very vague about this also. any way to accurately calibrate DRC? i find that it looks good at 100% for DVD's set at 480i, yet about 25% reality and 60% clarity for sat. and VHS. May sound like a dumb Question, so educate me

Upconverter.


It upconverts 480i to 960i by doubling both horizontal and vertical resolution. DRC will basically eliminate scan lines, but can cause some minor artifacts in the picture. Early sets with DRC had no adjustments. Newer models allow you to adjust the level of upconversion.


I actually prefer the Sony DRC upconversion of 480i to 960i for DIRECTV over the 480p output of my Sony SAT-HD200. The 480p picture may be cleaner, but I hate the scan lines on my 61", 4:3 TV. With DRC scan lines are pretty much eliminated, but some artifacts are present (although DIRECTV is really filled with other artifacts anyways).
