What would be the reasons to chose one of these sets over the other?

I watch standard cable and DVD's, it may be quite some time until I get much HDTV.

I don't want any hassles I just want something bulletproof and reliable. I have a smaller WEGA right now which I am pleased with.

I'd personally go with the XBR970 just because it is widescreen and is HD, but that's me. You may not care about HD now but you may change your mind about that later.
