FYI:

From IDG News Service

"Sony is developing a new display technology capable of a high-definition picture over a cinema-size screen and plans to show it next year, its chief executive officer (CEO) states.

The company is still developing the display and hopes to unveil it at the 2005 World Exposition, said Nobuyuki Idei, chairman and group CEO of Sony, speaking at a news conference in Tokyo. The screen will measure 10 meters by 50 meters, Idei said.

"It's something you have never, ever seen," he said.

Light will be projected onto the display from the front with projectors based on GLV (grating light valve) technology, Mina Naito, a spokeswoman for Sony, said.

GLV technology involves passing red, green and blue laser light across a grate-like array. Electrical current can be used to control the movement of the grates and this changes the amount of light diffracted or reflected. The resulting light is sent through a lens and then a scanning mirror creates a two-dimensional display. Advantages of the technology include wide color variation and high contrast, according to Sony.

Sony licensed GLV from Cypress Semiconductor subsidiary Silicon Light Machines in July 2000 and has been working on its commercialization for use in professional projection systems. It demonstrated a prototype of the technology at two trade shows in Japan in 2002 on a screen of several meters across. The system planned for Expo 2005 will be on a much larger scale.

"Until yesterday, (Sony Executive Deputy President) Mr. Chubachi was very anxious about making this announcement," Kunitake Ando, Sony president, quipped after Idei announced plans for the display.

"We're quite confident, we still have more than 300 days," responded Chubachi, whose responsibility covers key devices and production.

The 2005 World Exposition is scheduled to open on March 25 and run until Sept. 25. Participants from 125 countries and eight international organizations will attend and the organizers expect the expo to attract 15 million visitors."

Anyone know what time it is in Sweden right now? :)

Probably won't see his response till tomorrow.

Yup. In this post referring to an earlier thread.

Next batter.

I'm sure the "O" man must be showing someone his "O" face for this not to illicit a response.

Probably, certainly, OT.

Don't know what happens elsewhere, but there is a national organism here that collects and archives all movies around, in their celluloid format (well, probably only national productions, not Hollywoods' :D ). They plan to digitalize one day when digital supports will be proven to be reliable and durable, and, mostly, when there will be some "standard" and hardware to digitilize at 4000 lines lossless.

Does someone know if there is some worldwide (or not) cultural association that cares about old and current filmography to be "fixed" at their best quality for ever?

Ted Turner does a lot of "fixing" doesn't he? ;)

Sounds great.

Just to give some update on this GLV from good sources, and having seen it myself several times.

The commercialisation of this technology has been delayed to 2006 by S.

The GLV "projector" so far is not in a case but takes the space of a large closet containing separate pieces.

Lasers are water-cooled.

It requires warm-up and regular tweaking/calibration.

Cannot do CRT black..yet. But close enough.

Issue if laser beam hits the eyes.

The above gives us the scope of the challenges for industrial applications, let alone consumer market.

Pros: Faboulous colors, especially the reds, very deep and rich colors.Very Smooth picture, 100% fill ration, no screen-door or artifacts. High resolution.

Being the size of a refrigeratior might be a bonus for crt people but then glv needs to achieve very close to crt blacks. My hope is that Sony will make 10000:1. Also wouldn't a glv projector have a pretty good ANSI cr?

About the eye issue it should be safe to launch outside of USA. In USA perhaps buying a ticket to a glv show could stop any chance of starting a blindness lawsuit.

Demonstrating on a 500 square meter screen indicates serious lumens. Given that there are lasers that in an instant can consume close to the energy that USA consumes lasers can be powerful.

I am expecting lasers to shine on those 4k sxrd panels in Sony's "current" digital cinema projector.

I would not count on this. I asked that laser question to the JVC engineers who worked on the HD2K, they immediately said that it was impossible. My guess is that either the liquid crystals layer cannot properly block laser lights, or that you would need too many lasers , such as one per pixel. SXRD is basically the same as DILA.

I see the answer from the engineer as a sign of the opposite of what came out of his/her mouth. Also laser illumination of d-ila devices was first tried years ago. The cohherent polarization state of laser light make them more suitable as a light source as far as I understand. Why would laser light photons be any different from photons from a xenon lamp. That part I do not buy into.

hoe you are right.

the 4 k sony should developed for a big a very big screen.

otherwise 4k make no sense at all.

when i see the pr. picture i feel that it was very small to have a big xenon lamp inside!!!

anyway we will know it in some days.

The projector did not look that big and I had a similar thought to yours because of the size. Perhaps the projector can be fed with the light through optical fibers. I have read that the light lose some of its good polarization state properties in the fiber but that is not a big problem.

So, it seems pretty safe to conclude that GLV will not reach consumers this decade.

And maybe never.
