I know that I cannot record HDTV but it appears that the serial connection between the Showstopper and the Sony does not turn the Sony on when it is time to record. It DOES change the channels if the Sony is on. Anyone know if this is fixable or must I keep the Sony ON forever.

Is this how the IR Blaster works on any DSS Satelite dish? Cause it only changes the channels on my DSS as well (RCA). The Serial connection did not seem to work with my dish either..

Yes, quite right, and cable boxes as well. All of these devices have toggle power functions. The Replay (and Tivo) have no way of knowing the power on state of the device, thus sending a power toggle code could result in device being turned off if it had been on to start with. This is the accepted and "safe" way of handling it.
