My Sony 30XS955 has an optical audio output. There is also an optical output on the Scientific Atlanta HDTV set-top box that I am using. I bought a Monster Cable to connect the two, but it doesn't seem to be working.

Is the presence of an optical cable between a set-top box and a HDTV supposed to make a difference in the sound the TV produces, or is the optical output on the TV really only there to connect to a speaker system?

Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

You're connecting two outputs, not an input and an output, so you're not going to hear anything. Both the STB and the TV should be connected to a receiver.

Thanks for the response! That explains why I am getting no sound out of the TV when the cable is run between the STB and the TV. I will have to get a receiver.
