I just moved into a new house and just purchased this sony system. Im new to surround sound and I am trying to figure out the optimal placement for the rear speakers in my room layout. Any help you guys can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks

It looks like you're going to have to make some compromises with that room setup. The important part is deciding where your primary listening position is and setting up everything for that. After that you're gonna have to setup everything as best you can given the limitations of the room setup. If you use an SPL meter to make sure everything is the same level at the sweet spot, it should sound decent at least in that one spot. :-]

I recommend perusing thru this fine thread for details on the "right" way to setup a HT. Once you understand the theory it should be a little easier to understand the compromises and which will suit your preferences best.

If it's at all possible, I would put the TV directly across from the sofa and go from there.
The blank wall across from the sofa has a stairway and the room didnt look right with it over there.
Your front three will be okay, and the sub can go almost anywhere.

Your surrounds will be a problem, though. You're going to have one that's a little too close and one that's way off, unless you mount them on the ceiling or something. Even then, it'll be hard.
