Hi,

I am looking at getting a Samsung UN65F7100 and I am trying to determine if the HTST7 is ok to go with this TV or if I should go with a "native" Samsung soundbar such as the HW-F850 instead.

I've read great things about the HTST7 but one of my main concerns, besides sound obviously, is compatibility. Simple things, like the sound bar to turn on and off automatically when the TV turns on or off.

If anyone has any experience with these combos I'd like to hear.

Thanks in advance.

For simple compatibility, you'd pick the Samsung offerings because they are designed to work with your TV. However, none of them are anything special in the sound department, they rely on ARC to handle multiple sources as they only have a single HDMI input and a single HDMI output, and have no lossless decoding, only straight Dolby and DTS with no signs of PCM decoding in the specs, though it might be there. You should - I say should because I have gotten a Sony Blu-Ray player to work with a Samsung TV's CEC - get some control functionality with the Sony soundbars though your mileage may vary. My advice to you would be to forget the Samsung TV and just get a straight Sony system - TV, Blu-Ray player, and HT-CT660 or other lossless soundbar - for your uses. I think you'll be happier with Sony anyway.

Lex, I appreciate you taking the time to post.

Since my above post, I have decided to go 4K and due to budget, I'm gonna go with the F9000 since it is almost $500 less than Sony's 4K offering.

My old XBR just died after almost 10 full years of use. It must have heard me thinking about a new TV, lol.

I reckon I can try the HTST7 and exchange it for the F850 if I find it less compatible than desired.

I realize I'll take a hit in re-stock fee at BB but at least the option is there.

Not so many years back, I had Bryston amps, B&K pre-amps and B&W speakers so I remember what "good" sounds like.

My old B&W center channel speaker alone cost as much as the Sony sound bar.

My life is much simpler now so a sound bar is gonna have to suffice, but I'd prefer to get the best that sound bars have to offer.

I even got drawn to B&W's offering in my quest for a sound bar but from my reading, it might not be worth what they are charging for it.

Take care and thanks again.

Not sure where (what state) you are located, but here in California, we have a retailer named Fry's.  Fry's does not have a re-stocking fee.  I would imagine that you could find some other retailers that don't have re-stocking fees.

I still think you should just go with a straight Sony 1080P system - they have an excellent 65-incher - and forget 4K. 4K is NOT ready for prime-time. In two years, sure. You buy a 4K Samsung now and you will regret it as the new HDCP and HDMI tech required for real 4K use isn't installed in those sets yet.

Lex, I couldn't resist the great price on the 9000 so the trigger was pulled.

The future will tell but I hope you're inaccurate in your prediction of regret.

Thanks again.

So did you go with the sony sound bar and do you like it if you did? Thanks
Have not gotten either yet. The TV hasn't arrived but I'll update the thread at a later time.

Are you looking at the HTST7 to go with a Samsung TV?

Well I ended up going with a B&W Panorama 2 and the little sub that goes with it.

I'm a big fan of B&W since I had a few of their Nautilus 803's a few years back.

The Panorama sounds awesome and the sub completes the package very well. It also sounds great with music streamed to it via Chromecast from my phone.

Good luck with your decision if you haven't already made it.
