I don't know if these are actually problems with SOny or just any HDTV or me not noticing certain settings.

First off, I have the HDTV box hooked into VIDEO 6 because TW didnt give me a DVI cable for some reason. I have my dvd recorder on VIDEO1 right now until I move the cable box to DVI and then either have the dvd recorder or my dvd player on the extra component hookup that will be freed up. Anyway, for SOME reason 1. No picture from the cable box is on VIDEO1 even though I thought I had the dvd recorder hooked up properly. The cable box has NO coaxial jack on the back, so I assumed I only needed to use composite cables. (for now anyway). I have no coaxial cable hooked up to anything whatsoever now. But somehow it got a picture yesterday, but now it doesnt! Plus even when it got the cable box picture, it pressing "guide" on the cable box control only opened the guide on VIDEO6, not VIDEO1!!!!! AND 2. THERE SEEMS TO BE NO WAY to have anything EXCEPT full mode on video 6!!!!! I can't get the SD to be in normal 4:3 appearance!!!!! Yet on VIDEO1, it can be changed. I have the 4:3 default set to "normal". I can't get the default to show normal or even switch it by pressing "screen"!!!!!

I have so many unrelated problems too. Such as TW not even giving me a freakin' power supply cord and I temporarily have a cord from my dvd player hooked to it ebcause it had the same type of plug. I hope nothing is wrong with using that!

Let's see... What else is going wrong...

well:

1. I am wondering if I should have listened to people and got 4:3 since I usually watch non-widescreen shows. Although 4:3 normal is still huge to me because I only had a 20 inch before this 30 inch tv.

2. Everyone is tlaking about SD only looking "ok" on HDTVs. So does that mean it looks better on other tvs??? They make HD seem so great. I thought any picture was better. I knew HD would be much better than SD, but I assumed SD would be better than on other tvs too.

3. Have to decide if it's more important to use my final component hookup for Pioneer dvd recorder or Sony dvd player. Because I am not taking gamecube off component.

4. So far HDTV doesnt look so hot to me. Because in my limited viewing, it just seemed like people were all out of proportion. So what's the big deal about it? And is HDTV supposed to be viewed on FULL mode? Like I said, I can't evens witch it for some reason!

I probably have a million other issues, but I can't remember them. Mainly the thing I am wondering is whether or not there is something wrong by it always being on full mode because of the fact that it wont let me change the setting.

I am having some doubts whether I was smart or not, but I got so much knocked off the price, I would hate to then take it back. I bet nobody would have it cheaper for months. It sure seems great for games AND DVDS, IMO. But the way people tlak, I am assuming they're saying even dvds look WORSE ona n HDTV rthan a regular tv.

Plus don't know how important the AVIA dvd is.

omg, just turned on my dvd recorder and the picture is back AND in normal again. Yet the last time I turned it on, there was no picture at all. And the VIDEO6 is still only capable of showing "full".

Don't know which Sony TV you have. So I will let you know what I have going with mine and see if that helps. I have a Sony KV34HS510. I have the Component cable from the cable box hooked into Video 5. I have the DVI cable from the cable box hooked into Video 7. When I am in a HD channel I only can use FULL mode. Can't change it. Also I have my DVD player hooked to Video 6. VHS hooked to Video 2 (composite).

My advice would be try different connections. You should not have to have DVI to get HD. Also my cable company never gave me a DVI cable either. Also check to make sure you cable co. is not having problems. My was last week. All my HD would not work for days. Some one cut a major cable line in Grand Rapids Mi. that affected a large area. Even as far as Minnesota.

I would "assume" that recent Sony's are similar in their video inputs. But then again my Dad always told me never assume anything... :)

I was wondering that also. I believe it is only video. And so far I have only noticed one cable (a Monster cable) and it was $100. I hate to spend that. Some lady at the store claimed DVI is "much" better than component, but yet when component cables first came out, they acted like it ewas so perfect. I'm sure it is indeed betteer, but how much better can things get when they are already on a good tv with good cables?

Earlier today I was watching part of the debate and the cable box kept screwing up the picture. At least I got the correct power cord hooked on it now.....

I may try changing the connections around, but there's not much I can change really. I can get the DVI cable and thus it would change it from VIDEO6 to VIDEO9 or whatever the DVI is. I think 9... Or i could switch it to 5 instead of 6 and keep using component I guess.

Mine is the 30HS420

Does SD actually look better on a smaller than 30 inch NON-HDTV than an HDTV? That is what is really bothering me now. There are almost no SD channels, period. And also are DVDs better on HD or non?

DVI is Video only. HDMI is both sound and video.

To answer the question as to why I have two connections (component & DVI) is when I first got the TV set up with Comcast they set me up with component cables. I bought the DVI thinking I would get a better vid signal with them. Actually there is little difference with a CRT. The DVI is slightly better. I will use the DVI connection when watching HD and use the HTiB for the sound. I also will use the DVI later on when I get a newer DVD player. When I am just watching TV I use the component then I can use the TV speakers.

Basher, I would try different connections. On mine the DVI is ONLY Video 7. I would think that with yours you only have one connection for your DVI. But doesn't the HS420 have a HDMI port?

Also you might just have a bad cable box. I would call your cable company and complain.

EDIT: Damn TYPE-0s

I think it does have HDMI actually, but I havent really looked at it much to see where it goes. I wonder if it's the same type connector as thw DVI or if it goes somewhere else.
