I just bought a Sony 50" Grand WEGA(KF-50WE610) and didn't get the extended warranty. The extended warranty was almost 20% of the cost of the TV. WAY TOO HIGH! I'm thinking that this is where ALOT of these stores are making money.

warranty from some other stores do not cover bulb replacement, while bestbuy does. even you do not buy warranty, they still match price with local competitors.

my concer is, Sony LCD Rear Projector TV should have good quality control , besides bulb replacement, there is no need to buy extended warranty for KDF-60XS955. is that true?

Circuit City also covers bulb replacement. For what it would cost me to get it I can buy 3 bulbs! I know other stuff can go wrong, but from the reviews I've been reading that seems to be a BIG ONE. The credit card that I put the TV on doubles the manufacturer's warranty. :)

Don't forget the cost of liability of bulb replacement. Theres a big difference in price between the service tech goofing up on an install and you goofing up on an install. And doesn't the lamp light have to be reset like a check engine light? Find out how much a service call would cost, how much doing it yourself would cost, and how much the service plan would cost.. Per month, per day.. whatever. Then think about the money you spend on other stupid **** per month, per day. So, say the protection plan comes out to $120 a year - thats a matter of opting to stay in instead of going out to dinner with the significant other.. once or twice a year.. depending on where you like to eat.

But, then again, you are probably better off setting aside that $$ into some investment and taking it out when you need it. Creating your own protection plan fund. :)

kevlo9: Read the fine print of your credit card. You might not be covered for as much as you think. I think its only up to a certain amount or something odd like that - remember, no free lunches. My guess is that dealing with the credit card company wouldn't be much fun either.

While working at CC about 2 months ago I got this from a customer:

keep in mind this is the recent son KF42WE610 --- the one with the bulb problems....

I didnt buy your extended warranty and i need your advice on what to do... The other day my tv shut off(her bulb went out), i called the sony certified Tech , HE WOULD NOT FIX MY TV UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE LAST TIME HE PERFORMED THE FIX SONY DID NOT REIMBURSE HIM FOR HIS SERVICE.... so this lady was stuck. I told her to get on the horn with sony, i mean im sure something got done but still.... Never seen as many problems with a Tv as that model, but i do hear they have it straightend out!

When I went to BB... Their extended warranty plan that was listed for that TV was ~250... That's not bad... I too would question needing one if it was over $350...

Then again I am cheap.

I've read elsewhere on AVS that they've raised the price to $500 but it does include the bulb replacement now... :D

I have a 5+ year old Sony 53XBR200 that I got with a 5 year GE EW. I thank heaven we had it. That set has been a nightmare. It's been repaired at least 10 times in its life. The component input has been a chronic failure and it has failed again (no longer under warranty) and I switched the DVD to S-Video. I didn't extend the EW any further as I feel it's good money after bad. Would rather get HDTV if and when set fails for good. Hopefully SOON! :D

Why am I even looking at the 60XS?? Arrgh.

Yep, lemons, design flaws poor qc ...it happens with all brands and Sony is no exception. Get an extended warranty. It's a flack jacket in high failure rate big screen warfare. I hate extended warranties but really feel if you can't afford to replace a lemon after a couple years it's your only protection. Joe I'm surprised your EW didn't replace the set. Most allow for a certain number of service calls and then replace...I guess the fine print is different for all so there's the hard lesson....read the fine print. Another form of protection is buying your set at Costco...with their no questions return policy it gives peace of mind. My next big screen (probably plasma) will be from Costco.
