Friend of mine has an Sony E42A10 with a 9 month old bulb (Philips) and the picture has become very dark, almost unwatchable during the day and just tolerable enough to watch at night, Ive tried adjusting the picture, maxed out the IRIS setting, but this only helped a little. Is there anything else other than the bulb that can cause a dark picture or is it possible the bulb is already going bad? Thanks.

I have the same issue. I anyone knows a solution it would be much appreciated. For me, if the scene is a day or inside scene (that is bright) bright, the picture looks great, but if it is a night scene or a little darker, the picture gets very, very dark.

I got my replacement lamp directly from Sony.

That's good. Replace it with a new lamp, and keep it as a spare. Sometimes lamps don't dim first, but simply blow. Having a spare for when the new lamp goes will enable you to still watch TV (albeit darker) until the next new lamp can be delivered.
