Does anyone have any info on this model? I am finding very little on the ex500. I saw this at costco tonight. I am really trying to find a contrast ratio (I know they are overblown but it will give me a little comparison) and any other info anyone may have come up with.

Thanks

It's a 2010 model, and hasn't been officially released yet.

The specifications have not yet been revealed, other than the features.

I'm also guessing that that's a Costco exclusive model... so it might have a different advertised CR to say the least.

I saw the unpacked box over in the corner so I am guessing they just got it in today. And as far as price it is way below what I have seen for MSRP for the 500, but I can't find any info on either the 500 or the 501. From what I have found it is similar to the V5100 with a few extra features (PIP, cinema color)

Manufacturers don't custom build for Costco or anyone else, they merely take a panel already produced and assign a custom code number for those models and assign them to Sams and Costco et al. Sometimes they'll throw in an extra feature to justify that code like an included mount. They've been doing this forever and virtually every panel carries a different code than other B&M's but they are not made to order for them.

Sony so far has chosen not to publish the contrast ratios on the 2010 models making it challenging to cross match or even to decide on new Tech versus old Tech without some type of CR comparison but in this case it should be rather obvious that this would be a 500 series but the trick is what the hell the CR is rated at on these new panels..

Hopefully this is helpful. Also what do you think of the set so far?? I am going to Costco this weekend to see what they have.

I just picked this up last night (KDL-55EX501) and to me it is a big improvement over the 55V5100 I had. So far no picture or sound issues. Just trying to set it up for best picture but have no calibration experience or disk to go by. Just using my 4 year old Sony LCD as an example. Hopefully there will be a EX500/501 thread here soon so we can share comments.

So far very nice and enjoying it. Also has 3 year warranty plus I believe one more if using Amex card through Costco. The EX500 through Sony has only one year warranty and it costs more than the Costco version. They are exactly the same from what I can tell.

Hope this helps.

How do these two compare - does the EX500 have better contrast?

rwb - how much was it? also do you have any pics of your new set? Love to see what it looks like

We are not suppose to quote prices, but price is very good at Costco. To see the TV, go to Sony.com. You can see it under televisions. Their picture is as good as I could get.

So how are the blacks? Is it clearly better than the V5100 with a black screen?

I would say yes, but that is my own opinion. Factor in I had a bad V5100 I felt. This set I am very pleased with the blacks. The settings I used on the V5100 have not been much help with this set. I have sort of started from there and have made quite a few changes to get it so I like it. Not sure if that is good or bad.

I picked up my 55ex501 at costco friday. It is beautiful! colors are very nice. I had a 48 mitsubishi rear proj hdtv and this is a major improvement! I really dont see any black issues or motion blur that ive read about on lcds, but i am no expert. A great bargain i think. the instruction book lists both the 500 and 501 models on it, so they are the same, but the 501 for costco does have the 3 year warranty with it!

How are the viewing angles on it?

I saw it at Costco yesterday, while it looked ok, the feed that it had was horrible and i could not get a good feel for the quality of the picture.

This is one of the models that I'm considering, it will be in the corner of my living room so viewing angles are pretty important to?

Just bought one today. Have not installed it yet. Liked the picture better than the adjacent Samsung 6 series at Costco. Tough to beat the price and three year warranty, increased to 4 years by purchasing with Costco Amex card. The guys at Costco said Sony is trying to get its "first place" in HDTVs back from Samsung with low pricing. I'm sold.
