I originally was looking for a 37" but quickly found out there is not much to choose from. I can squeeze a small width 40" in my bedroom space. I won't be using the 3D feature but to get the smallest bezels it looks like I have to accept 3D. Now I have to decide between the Sony kdl40ex720 or Samsung UN40D6400/6500, or what ever else you suggest with a small bezel width. The Samsung has the smallest bezel but I can't seem to find it and the Sony in the same store at the same time to compare. The TV will be hung in a bedroom with contolled low light. I like deep blacks. I have a 60" Kuro that still amazes me in this department. Help and recommendations please.

Thanks,

I have an EX720 and HDTV had quite a thick bezel compared to the D6400. The D6400 can be found for cheaper by the way, and will have a better image. The EX720 is kind of lack luster when it comes to displaying colors, white levels and general brightness.

If you are not going with 3D, you might as well go for a 2010 model as an alternative. You can get a good 240hz hdtv at 40" for around the same price, if not less, than the 6400 or EX720.

Thanks for the information, I will lean toward a Samsung 6400/6500 or look for a 2010 model. I think the only 40" 2010 model with the same small bezel is a 7000 series but I will check.

I saw the samsung, wow, really nice with the small bezel, it will be the exact size of a 37" with a thick border. The Sony wasn't anything to write home about.

I am leaning towards the UN40D6400 new as well mainly because of I can only fit a TV smaller than 37" width in the spot its going.

Originally wanted the Panasonic TC-P40ST30 but going back to getting a TV to fit in the spot rather than mounting it on the wall.

Any opinions on this set yet? Would it be just as good as the Panasonic? Don't care about 3D, viewing angle or bright lights.

Anyone own this set yet?

Has anyone seen these TVs side by side? Sadly, none of the stores around here have the Sony up yet

I have seen and demoed both of these sets, but not side by side. The Samsung at Best Buy and the Sony at Fry’s(I'm out west on a trip). I set them to normal instead of the store torch settings. I know you really need to see them side by side. Anyway they both looked very nice with deep blacks, and good color in the default normal mode. I chose the Samsung for its thin bezel. If they both would have had the same thin bezel it would have been a difficult choice.

I am looking at the exact same models, as they are the only two that will fit in my cabinet.

Has anyone made direct video comparisons ? I only care about HD 2-D.

Thanks

I saw both together and felt the samsung to be way over saturated on colors. You could even see the bleeding... so I went with the Sony and been pretty pleased with it.

If I may make a suggestion which I find helps a lot....bring a commercial blu-ray dvd with you to the stores. Ask one of the employees to put it in each of the tv's you are comparing and go to a pre-selected scene. I haven't found one yet not connected by blu-ray player. Get the remote and set the settings you like or the different ones you want to try. This will give you a comparison of what you like.

Personally, I have found Pirates of The Caribbean---At World's End---Scene 6 to be the best. It involves different looks, including outdoors and dark indoor scenes.

This led me to dislike the ex720. Totally lacks color, clarity and depth in my opinion. I totally agree with DataDay who used a great description....lackluster. But that kind of stuff is all personal preference.

Good Luck.

I exchanged my 40'' UND6400 because it had flashlighting in the corners.

And it flickered sometimes while watching the dark knight.

I got the 37'' panasonic DT30 and it has no flashlighting or flickering.

Do NOT get the samsung.

Get the panasonic or sony.

God its so funny how many Samsung haters are on this board. Also funny how many cream over anything Panasonic.

That being said get the Sammy. It smokes the Sony. Not even close and puts the Panasonic to bed as well.

Any updates on this thread ? Sony vs the samsung 40 inch. I think bestbuy exclusively carries the 6420 whereas other internet/mailorder people carry the 6400.

Regardless Sony 720 vs Samsun 6400/6420

I chose the Best Buy 6420. It has been through 2 firmware updates. Along with the updates and recommended calibration settings I see very little to no flashlighting (I only use in a totally dark room, so if there is flashlighting I would definitely see it) and, the picture is Awesome! Also the very small Bezel makes it very appealing. The Sony is a very fine set also.
