hi all i am so close to pulling the trigger on a 42" plasma and from all that i have read on these forums the panny 25u sounds like the king for an ed plasma, the only thing holding me back is that the panny might have an attractive picture but i am not all that crazy about its astethics its a wee bit ugly to me imo "sorry panny owners" but today i saw the sony ke 42m1 and i felll in love with her, she is a looker... i was wondering if anyone compared these 2 sets, color, contrast, blacks, overall picture quality and interface, or if anyone has it and can tell me how the picture is. the place i was at had problems with there signal so i could not really get a good gauge on how good or bad it was...

I just returned my panasonic 37pd25up. I have read great things about this TV but was not very impressed with the picture. I also own the sharp LC30HV6U and the picture seems better to me than the pani. My major complaint about the set was how satellite looked on it. The sharp really outputs a nice picture in this regard and the pani seemed washed out to me. I am by no means slamming the TV I probably did not have it set up properly. I may have just got a lemon, who knows. I have read so many glowing reviews about this TV and was really looking forward to owning it but just a little let down by the picture that it produced.
I like the styling of the Sony, but I so not see the same picture quality as the Panasonic and it is more expensive. I have viewed the set at many different stores under different lighting conditions (including the Sony Style store in San Francisco). My wife does not have the same eye as I do for pq, and she did not like the Sony. Just two opinions, so between the two I would vote for the panasonic at a better price and better pq.

anyone else that would like to chime in...any sony owners...
I have the SONY 42XS910. I was going after the 42XBR but it didn't fit in my cabinet. I love the SONY treatment of analog signals. All of the sets seem to do well on component input. At that point it becomes a matter of personal choice for picture quality. The analog comparison was what decided it for me since my cable broadcasts the bottom 100 channels in analog. The WEGA engine does some scaling tricks for "wide zoom" which makes a good 16:9 picture out of analog 4:3.

I looked at Pioneer Elite, Phillips, Panasonic, Fujitsu and Samsung sets. I finally ended up with the set above and a 30 inch LCD 30XBR900.
I agree with TonyTiger that the Sony does a superb job with the SD inputs on the widezoom setting. I have the Sony KE-42TS2. I also have an ED Panny, the 42PWD6UY and use it only for HD input since the SD has poor PQ with my DTiVo.
