Sony KLV30XBR900 LCD In Store Impressions

All I can say is WOW.....! I saw this yesterday at my local Tweeter store and it looked awesome. Wicked cool design, great blacks, pixels not visable at 2" away, rockin contrast. Very cool two piece design so the screen itself is very thin and light. Too bad it's not 50" and I would have taken it on the spot.

Yeah, I've seen it at GGs and I'm saying that if this continues and they do get to the 50" size, I have already said to myself and wife that I will replace my Plasma with one. Time will tell.

I just saw this set at my local Circuit City, and then at Good Guy's. I thought it looked fantastic, displaying high definition video. I also saw the

new Sharp 30" lcd set at my local Best Buy store, and was not nearly as

impressed as with the Sony. The color on the Sharp looked noticeably off.
Are there any pics of this set? Ive looked and searched but cannot find any links to pics.
I also saw this LCD next to a Sony 32" plasma at the Palo Alto Fry's. The fill-factor is definitely better on the LCD. Viewing angle was great. It was showing some animation DVD and I noticed some contouring. Not sure if it's due to the LCD though.
I agree the fill factor is better than the 32" plasma, but by about 4-5 feet away, I was hard pressed to say that mattered one iota.

I think this is a very good LCD, but it still seemed a lot bigger than the Sharp (both with speakers) due to the Sony's sassy bezel. Also, the Sharp was $1500 cheaper.

Does anyone who has seen both think the Sony is worth $1500 more? I think it is cosmetically gorgeous enough to justify that price, but otherwise not at all worth it.

cheridave,

Given your desire for an accurate image, I'm surprised to see you considering LCD. I've yet to see an LCD that had good black levels, and that did not change brightness and color as my head moved. I would think that would drive you nuts - especially the ever-changing black levels depending on seating position.

Has Sony really advanced the art of LCD *that* much?

I saw the Sony at CC and Harvey Electronics: the Harvey display was Monsters DVD and it looked good but with some contouring

aesthetically the Sony is a wonderful unit: there will be some custom installations where the Sony will be ideal

Cannot say if PQ is better than Sharp 30: from the limited viewing I would say it may be as good-

time for a shootout?

Rich,

I will let markrubin and Rogo be the bearer of good news or bad news concerning LCD technology. I just see some positive possibilities. The one I saw at GGs was on a dedicated feed- both DVD and HD. Although it was under bright lighting conditions and if there are weaknesses in the Blacks I could not see it. Colors did look bright and deep and not artificial. Angle viewing was just as good as direct viewing.

Remember, key words in my post were "if this continues" and "Time will tell".

I've got one, and can't say enough good about it. While not quite the perfect size, I have little else to complain about. The processor for NTSC delivers a picture that you could swear was FOX 480p, and it only gets better from there. DVD looks like a movie. Still waiting for the transcoder to arrive for my DTC-100 so I've not had the opportunity to do true HD yet, but should have that this week. As far as the size goes, it's a 2 step process for me - I got this and it's in the living room, but it's eventual destination is the bedroom where it is the perfect size. Need the availability and pricing on larger LCDs to loosen up a bit first. Picked it up for just under $5k at GG in Concord, CA. Saw the Sharp and thought it didn't compare favorably regardless of price.

I promised Rogo a report on the DRC functionality but haven't had time to do any dedicated toying lately, but I'll get to it soon.
No hurry RLS. :)

Absolutely! I'm surprised you don't already have one on order, although you must be close to running out of rooms to put these in! :D

Actually, it would be good to know how these two compare, side-to-side.

I think it is someone else's turn to do a shootout, or help out: if anyone in NY/ NJ has the Sony and wants to travel, I can provide the Sharp displays and the location

any interest?

I saw the Sony again today. I must say the horizontal viewing angle is awfully good. I was less sure the vertical viewing angle was as extraordinary. I mean, it was good -- especially for an LCD -- but it wasn't as good as the horizontal, and wasn't as good as a plasma.

I watched a NCAA game in HD on one and the motion artifacts were horrible. Most other aspects of the picture looked pretty good though.
That's disappointing Greg... A group of us watched the championship game on a friend's 12-foot screen and there were zero or nearly zero discernable motion artifacts...
SONY's 30" lcd glass made by LG, and LG/ZENITH's 30" lcd tv is $2k less than sony.
But 0crash, that Sony frame has gotta be worth $2K. :)

This display was featured in today's Tweeter ad, so that may be one place to see it.
Has anyone seen this sony in a store showing anything other than animated movies. I've seen Toy Story and Spirit so far, at two different stores. Needless to say I was impressed. But I'm beginning to think they are trying to hide something like slow response times or overly orange skin tones. Maybe RLS could shine some light on this. Thanks. Also when can we expect the bigger models, I can't wait.
