If I feed a Sony KP51WS520 a 720p source signal (from an Xbox), will it convert it to 540p or 1080i for display?

Because it's a higher number, converting the signal to 1080i sounds better, but is converting it to 540p just as good because it's progressive? In other words, do I care if it converts it to 540p or 1080i?

I've read through the manual online and read several posts about the television, but I have not gotten confirmation on this point.

I'm pretty sure the 520 converts 720p to 480p. Sony crt rptvs will do 3 different scanrates--480p, 960i, and 1080i.

Incoming 480i is converted to either 480p or 960i selectable with the "drc" button on the remote. You can have plain 480p, called "progressive", 480p with 3/2 pulldown called "cinemotion" or 960i. Incoming 720p will only be displayed as 480p.

This is only an issue if you have an X-Box and want to play their HD games--the X-Box will only output these as 720p, won't do 1080i.

Any and all set top HD tuner boxes or HD cable boxes can be setup to convert incoming 720p signals to 1080i and send that out to the tv. I've seen this conversion done by 3 different boxes and all were excellent, indistinguishable from a native 1080i broadcast.

So, in short, unless you absolutely must play X-Box displayed at a native 720p you don't care about this issue.

I have an Xbox and want to play their HD games. I don't care if 720p is converted to another HD format (1080i) but down converting the Xbox's HD output to 480p kinda sucks. I want to play their HD games in HD, not 480p.

Passing the Xbox output through a HD STB and having the STB convert it to 1080i is a great idea. My old HD DirecTV receiver would've done that (Samsung TS360) but my new one (LG 3200A) doesn't have any inputs to plug the Xbox into.

There is no such thing as the perfect solution to any problem in the world of home theater, is there?

Well I don't know about the 520, I can say that my 57ws550 can display 480p, 720p, and 1080i all natively. I checked this throught the service menu and when I feed it a 720p signal it said.....720p :) If anything the 520 might upconvert 720p to 1080i.

Just my 2cents.
