Hi everyone, I haven't posted here in a while but I have a question. I just recently bought a 30hs420 and love the tv except I would like to get my black level retention better. I've already been in the service menu and got my colors and all that adjusted, but I don't know which settings would improve my black level to the greatest degree. Just so you know I'm running a Denon DVD2200 as my source unit hooked up with Tributaries component cables. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did a search and found some posts on the 30" but nothing that talked about this.

Thanks,

Generally on sony's the black level is too low on the middle settings.

To adjust it properly you need a calibration disc like AVIA or DVE.

I would'nt worry about SBRT or GAMM, because these will alter your contrast settings and make contrast bloom.

Or you can use a THX disc, that are found on some movies, but keep in mind that those settings are for that movie only. What may look good for that movie, may not for another get what i mean?

I have been using DVE and the issue that I am having is when I adjust at the low apl pluge pattern I see the middle lines and barely see the one to the left and right like it say it supposed to look but when I switch to the high apl the two fainter lines dissapear and I can still see the other two but not like on the low apl screen. So that is why I'm wondering if there is an adjustment in the service menu to improve retention. I'm familiar with how to adjust the tv and various settings in the service menu, but some of the abbreviations that Sony uses I'm unsure of.

Another site had this advice:

Fix black level retention. Set UBLK and DCTR to 0 for all modes.

However I've just checked, and if you're using Pro picture mode (you are, right? RIGHT?!) these will be at 0 by default.
