Sony LCD vs Panasonic Plasma

2485 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  TNG
What's up everyone, I'm in the market for purchasing a new HDTV. I'm torn between these two technologies and models...

Sony's 2007, LCD KDL40V3000 (40 Inch)

Panasonic's 2008, Plasma PZ80 (42 Inch)

My main concern in this battle, is that I heard plasma's degrade over time. I plan to keep this TV till it dies lol. Many people have told me that (plasmas in general) look amazing the first few months, then start to degrade. Can anyone shed light on this issue?

To give you a better idea, the room is bright, and I have about 8-10 feet between couch and wall. Any recommendations/help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I'm in the same position as you are. I was really leaning toward the Plasma, but then when I realized the power usage differences, the LCD started to look much better.
If you're going to be putting it in a bright room you may want to go LCD. Most plasmas suffer from some horrendous reflections!!

As do a lot of Glossy and semi gloss LCDs, I have seen the Sony 46s4100 next to a 50 inch Panasonic 720p plasma, they looked largely the same in the Walmart I saw them at (including reflections, the Sony was actually slightly more annoying than the Panasonic for some reason, I just couldn't quite place it.)

Except that the lcd's are much brighter and even the samsungs don't reflect as much as most plasmas.

Well, that is true. I was going to add that into my post, but I figured most would assume I meant matte LCD VS a glossy plasma since plasmas are all glossy.

The new Sony's have a semi-gloss screen, which seems to do something wierd with reflections, the Panasonic just dulled them greatly. (Panasonic has one of the best anti reflection filters of any TV that uses a glossy screen)

I can't believe you are saying a semi-gloss sony screen is more annoying than a plasma, are you in the wrong forum?

I have never seen an LCD reflect as bad as plasma, since the OP said he had a bright room he needs to stick with the sony.
Thanks for the replies.

so now that the GLOSSY issue is solved...

What about the rumor/issue of plasma's degrading over time?

I'm just going by what I have seen in my local Walmart, all three of the Sony s4100 that they have on display reflect worse than the Panasonic plasma they had set up (this was the only plasma that I could say this about, the Sanyo and Vizio both reflect more than the Sony) I am pretty sure that the Sony he is looking at is matte, but it also had dark color smearing. The new Sony sets have pretty much beaten that smearing, but they are also reflective now. (semi-gloss)

Remember, Panasonic has developed one of the best anti reflection screens on the market, it isn't all that surprising that they do better at glare than the new semi-gloss screens.

Plasma and LCD both degrade over time (LCD uses a CCFL lamp to light the screen, light bulbs can dim over time) Plasma slowly gets darker over time, but the new sets are rated for 100k hours so it shouldn't be a problem. The electronics in either tech would probably give out before the panel half-life is ever reached. (power supplies are usually the first to go)

You shouldn't have to worry about degrading with either set. Both should last you more then 20 years, it certainly not something I would worry about.

I've owned an LCD and a plasma and each has their strengths and weaknesses. The main problem I have with plasmas is yellow trailing, similar to the rainbow effect, where a yellow trail follows light images on dark backgrounds. While it was a deal breaker for me, the good news very few people see that effect so if you've spent time with a plasma and haven't noticed it, you're probably fine.

Both of the sets you listed are good, try to spend some time with each and decide which looks better to your eyes.

That about sums it up, I was the opposite, LCD resolution loss blur was worse for me than Plasma fringing, which is very rare once the set is broken in. (it has been steadily reducing over the past few months, it is still there if I look for it, but only a handful of games show it)

I think that if you go to the Plasma area you will find that the first 100/200 hours of viewing are the most important. There is a period where the "break-in" must be carefully monitored. If it is not done correctly it can affect PQ for the long term on the set.

I think that during this time the set is a little brighter than normal and will settle in to normal after the first 100/200 hours.
