Sony Premierpro 23" LCD vs Samsung 240T?

1037 Views 20 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  dwx
I'm trying to decide which monitor to purchase for a new computer.

Although there is a lot of information on the Samsung monitor, very little has been written on the Sony.

Has anyone been able to do a side by side comparison?

Specs. show that the Samsung has 270cd/m2 brightness versus 200 for the Sony and the Samsung has a refresh rate of 24ms vs Sony's 40. Samsung's contrast ratio is higher than Sony's as well.

Viewing angles appear to be relatively the same.

Sometimes stats are meaningless when it comes to the overall quality of the image.

Does anyone have any experience with both monitors?

Also which is the better video card, the GeForce 4mx or the Radeon 9000 pro? Can both cards provide full resolution to the DVI input for either monitor?

Thanks in advance.

I have the Sony Premierpro 23 on order from Dell

I have a couple of Samsung 240T's in use at work on ATI 9000 Pro cards- these are the original 240T's and I expect the Sony will be more impressive

give me a week or two and I will report

Thank you for your response.
Ron

in the meantime I can tell you the 240T's are run at 1920x1200/DVI

at work the guys prefer the ATI cards and we just started using the 9000pro's

I have posted on the 240T's- a quick recap:

calibrates nicely- but I see vertical lines said to be due to backlighting

brightness/colors slightly lacking to me- Very good as computer monitor but did not like for video/HDTV

anxious to see the Sony

I saw the Sony side-by-side with the 17-inch (SDM-V72W) and for video, it looked washed out in comparison. The 17-inch, which I ended up getting, had much better contrast, brighter, more vibrant colors and looks fantastic with HD sources.

I also liked the new wide-screen HD-capable 17-inch Samsung but it was almost twice as much. I'm also very interested in the new 22-inch Samsung but it isn't available yet.

My Samsung 240T is driven by a Nvidia Geforce4 based video card using DVI at 1920x1200, and as far as I know, I have not seen any other LCD monitor which exceeds it in terms of performance. The new 23" Apple Cinema display may match the 240T.

I see no "vertical lines" in my 240T, nada.
I got the Sony SDM-P232W yesterday and have it running on an ATI 9700 Pro card- this card allows me to run 2 monitors at separate resolutions nicely

I set the Sony up for 1920x1200 DVI and it was automatically detected by Win XP

the Sony is beautiful- there is a fan which is very quiet: 2 inputs each with a VGA and DVI connector, and a full size removeable plastic back cover for access to inputs and power connector (power is IEC line voltage on the back of the display)

it comes with a DVI cable, a VGA cable, a CD with utilities I have not checked out- no remote control

Backlighting is excellent- nice and even with no visible lines at 100%

PQ is also excellent- very good brightness/color

this is a quick look- perhaps I will post more after a few days of use but my first reaction is very positive and for me a better choice than the 240t

the Sony is only a computer monitor- the 240t handles video as well

Hey Mark,

I heard that you were talking about me - I didn't even realize that you were a moderator on this forum!

I'm thinking about a wide format LCD for my PC, and I wonder how you you are liking your PREMIERPRO.

How do you think it stacks up to the Samsung? I like the idea of PIP on the 240T for video, and of course, HDTV usage is always a plus in my business...

I had a 240 T for sometime and now have the Sony and in terms of clarity and overall satisfaction I would say the nod goes slightly to sony. I also like the black look over silver but ymmv... The samsung does give off that wow factor just as well and is an impressive performer but it still cost a bit more and is older technology to some degree. The carrot will always be chased in that aspect. And for those wondering, Page computers was selling the sony at $2499.00

cheers

Aleic
I agree with Aleic

the Samsung displays video/PIP, etc- the Sony does not

the Sony is a newer model which has better backlighting

both are fine LCD monitors

Have you looked at the new Samsung 225w?

22", 16ms, 450 cd/m2
Thanks all for the replies...although I don't see any strong commitment either way here...

Samsung 225w ? Man, I can't even get a web hit on that one yet! Do you have a link to some info?

Has anyone tried HDTV on the Sony? Is it fast enough?

I'm using the Sony's 17-inch "little brother", the SDM-V72W, for HDTV and it works great. I saw this unit side-by-side with the 23-inch and I bought it because video looked completely washed out on the 23 but looked fantastic on the 17. I'm using it with a PC/MyHD/9700 Pro combo into the VGA port, a DirecTivo into the s-video and a Hughes E-86 (for ATSC/OTA...) via component inputs. All three work great, especially for HD. When I can find a 22-23 inch version that looks this good, I'll give up all rights to this one to my son, who keeps hooking his Xbox HD cable into it!

Gary,

Are you saying that the Sony SDM-P232W looked washed out? That would be very disappointing at the price.

I'm using a 21" CRT monitor at the moment, and looking for a size upgrade for the benefit of my poor tired eyes. I'm not sure that a 17" monitor would be a step in the right direction, but I might consider it for my shop PC, if it looks as good as you say.

The samsungusa site is not alot of help in this case. I've looked around but I guess it's so new there's not alot of info out there yet. There's also a larger sibling the 295w.

Oh, I see...thank you. It must be aimed at DTV applications with that big screen and lower resolutions...(?)

Mark --

The Sony 23 only looked washed out when playing back video. For regular PC monitor use it looked very nice. I suspect the difference in video performance has to do with the slower response times.

Gary, did you happen to see the LCDs at Circuit City? I stopped by there last night and they had the 17 and 23 side-by-side. The 23 was hooked up to a cheapo Viewsonic VB50 that converts video to VGA. The image was really bad. I would not judge it until it's connected to a good source.
