Sony promises cinema screen like 'you've never seen'

Sony is developing a new display technology capable of a high-definition picture over a cinema-size screen and plans to show it next year, its chief executive officer (CEO) states.

The company is still developing the display and hopes to unveil it at the 2005 World Exposition, said Nobuyuki Idei, chairman and group CEO of Sony, speaking at a news conference in Tokyo. The screen will measure 10 meters by 50 meters, Idei said.

"It's something you have never, ever seen," he said.

Light will be projected onto the display from the front with projectors based on GLV (grating light valve) technology, Mina Naito, a spokeswoman for Sony, said.

GLV technology involves passing red, green and blue laser light across a grate-like array. Electrical current can be used to control the movement of the grates and this changes the amount of light diffracted or reflected. The resulting light is sent through a lens and then a scanning mirror creates a two-dimensional display. Advantages of the technology include wide color variation and high contrast, according to Sony.

Sony licensed GLV from Cypress Semiconductor subsidiary Silicon Light Machines in July 2000 and has been working on its commercialization for use in professional projection systems. It demonstrated a prototype of the technology at two trade shows in Japan in 2002 on a screen of several meters across. The system planned for Expo 2005 will be on a much larger scale.

"Until yesterday, (Sony Executive Deputy President) Mr. Chubachi was very anxious about making this announcement," Kunitake Ando, Sony president, quipped after Idei announced plans for the display.

"We're quite confident, we still have more than 300 days," responded Chubachi, whose responsibility covers key devices and production.

The 2005 World Exposition is scheduled to open on March 25 and run until Sept. 25. Participants from 125 countries and eight international organizations will attend and the organizers expect the expo to attract 15 million visitors.

Where will this put the 4k sxrd, ultra high end ht or average cinema with glv reserved for prestigous movie theaters?

Also what about that aspect ratio 5:1?

ESLP by Evans and Sutherland is a 4kx16k projector. GLV is not fixed pixel in the sense like the other technologies. I assume that 16k only says that the picture is modulated 16k times in the horizontal direction and is perhaps not indicative of the aspect ratio.

It seems strange to me to project 50m by 10m. An IMAX dome projection would be more immersive! The advanatage is with laser Sony can project and maintain focus on curved surfaces.

Project on a 50m by 20m torus screen instead!

Warlock was an early laser projector prototype that seems to evolve into the ESLP by Evans and Sutherland.

"To solve this deficiency, the Human Effectiveness Directorate has been working with industry partners since the mid-90s to develop new, novel, ultrahigh-resolution projector technologies. In June 2001, Evans and Sutherland, Inc. (E&S) delivered the directorate's first-ever ultrahigh-resolution laser projector prototype called Warlock (see Figure 1). Warlock is a 1080 vertical line by 5000 horizontal line, 60 Hz, noninterlaced, monochrome projector that the directorate will use to support visual research activities. Eventually, the directorate will upgrade Warlock to a 5120 x 4096 full-color projector as modulator and laser technologies become available. "

ESLP is about resolution with 4kx16k. Sony will likely focus on light output. I believe that ESLP is 3000 ANSI lumen with two light sources. I also see Sony using no more than two projectors for that screen and perhaps only one.

The GLV technology can have variable aspect ratio by changing the range of the scanning mirror, thus making it unecessary to have multiple projectors for wide-aspect-ratio material.

I think your answer is here:

Sony appears to be hedging their bets pretty heavily and trying to make inroads into the high end market (home AND cinema) now with SXRD whereas GLV is obviously still very much in development

That is true Steve

I wonder what kind of presentation they are planning with 50by10? I would think seating very close to the screen and perhaps a curved screen with 160 degrees or so. It does not sound like a movie presentation. For that 2.35 is just fine.

Reading between the lines I would say that customer shipments are at least a couple of years away.
