I know what jtuck2 was talking about; there was something similar to XBR that referred to the first electronics that had "extra bass" or whatever. But I knew XBR refers to their top-tier television sets. For example Best Buy doesn't even carry the XBR line.
Well here are some official responses from Sony:
The term "XBR means "Extended Bit Rate".This feature improves the clarity of the picture.
"WEGA" stems from the name of the brightest star in the constellation Lyra used by Hipparchus, the Greek astronomer, to measure the brightness of other stars. Now the WEGA line is the standard by which rival televisions sets are to be gauged.
In 1969 Sony found a way to unify the electron gun aimed at the individual red, green, and blue phosphors. This Trinitron technology resulted in a sharper, brighter picture. More recently, in 1998, Sony created a
direct-view television featuring a virtually flat glass screen, called a FD Trinitron Wega (pronounced Vay-Guh) television. Sony televisions that incorporate flat-screen technology are nick-named for the brightest star
in the constellation Alpha Lyra.
Just a note-- The person didn't actually say what FD stood for but I guess it's short for Flat Display or Flat Direct-view, based on what he was saying.
