Sony SA-WX700 Subwoofer: How does it compare?

1819 Views 5 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  bmedude
Thinking of buying the Sony SA-WX700 subwoofer. Specs look fairly impressive (dual 10-inch woofers; 250 watts; bass down to 20 Hz), and the price is very nice (under $300).

Does anyone have input regarding how well this unit stacks up against the competition?

Sony SA-WX500 is a good sub in the 150 dollar price range ( if you shop around).

BUT once you get close too the 300 dollar range, Sonys start loosing their appeal to me, i start looking at "real" 12 inch subs, like DYIs, used 700 dollar subs, etc ...

The problem with Sony's is they use pretty cheap paper cones, cheap enclosures etc. They are very nice in the 150 dollar range though, I used to own one, no regrets.

I paid 400 bucks for my used Infinity IL120s , its 5 times the sub as my Sony...
I have a two Sony receivers, 2 Sony televisions, a Sony 300 disc DVD/CD player, a Sony 5 disc CD player, a Sony duel tape deck, and a Sony directivo unit. I love Sony products, but I wouldn't buy Sony speakers.

The sony sub got good reviews - a bit too boomy for music perhaps, but good for HT. I personally like the boomy character. 500 model can be bought at ebay for $129.
Thanks for the input guys. Has anyone seen any formal reviews of the WX-700 in any A/V magazine or website? I can't find anything.
