Sony/Samsung/Panasonic comparison

1471 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  xxheyxx
Here are three panels I am thinking about:

Sony KDL-V32XBR1 32" LCD - [EDIT] - A sony XBR model with a sweet picture and blacks, but too expensive for my budget I think

Samsung LN-S3251D 32' LCD - [EDIT] - Great picture, a tick below the Sony but way better price

Panasonic - 37PX60U 37" Plasma - [EDIT] – Great Plasma from what I see, and a Consumer Reports top pick. I guess this is really comparing apples to oranges though since the other 2 are LCD

Does anyone have any comments on some of the models above or maybe some alternative suggestions in the same price range that may be better choices? Also, not sure how standard cable would look on these. I am a noob with these things as this would be my first LCD/Plasma purchase

I have last years Panasonic 37" and I would definately call it a best pick. Awesome tv!!
Unless you're a gamer, in which case you'll likely not be allowed to game on your Plasma for like a year.
The Panasonic has a pixel count of 1024 x 720.

The Samsung has a pixel count of 1366 x 768.

This may not matter much to you but now that I get the Voom channels from Dish Network, there is an MPEG4 channel that shows soccer games in hidef.

my hidef panasonic crt and sony crt hidefs can't display the entire field the way a Samsung does with the higher pixel count.

Also, as far as LCD's goes, I think the Samsung has the best picture of all LCD's that I've seen including the Sony XBR.

Good luck deciding,

Good luck deciding,
LCD usually has higher resolution than Plasmas. However, plasmas have better contrast and black levels and therefore significantly better for watching movies. Colors on Plasmas also tend to look more realistic than on an LCD (IMHO).

Ideally, I would advice you go to a BB or CC and see if your prefer LCD to plasma. If you want a plasma, the Pannys are probably the best (IMHO), for LCD, I prefer Sony, if you like Samsung that's fine as well...

I'd go plasma. Just see them in a store, it'll make the decision for itself :p

Plazman, I agree with you. My only point is that the pixel count is higher on the LCD's that were mentioned and it will matter if viewing material such as what I listed above. But again, it may not matter to him.

It does to me and when I upgrade my HDTV crt in my bedroom, I will probably get the Samsung model LN-R3296 (1080p lcd that comes out at the end of the year), because as far as I know, there is no 32" plasma with a 1366 x 768 pixel count.

As an example, the Panasonic plasmas only get a pixel count of 1366 x 768 in their 50" model (The biggest HDTV that I can put in my bedroom is 32").

Thanks a lot for the info guys.

I did look at all of these screens in the store. I was able to compare the Sony XBR and the Samsung closely since they were right next to each other, but the Panasonic was on another wall. The Samsung was very close to the Sony, and for the price, the Samsung wins hands down (although the Sony had a CableCard slot and QAM tuner.) I'll get HD cable anyway thoughm so does QAM matter? I'll need a set-top box though.

I don't really game very much at all but I do watch a lot of movies. I did notice that the plasmas did tend to have better contrast, and the black levels of the LCDs weren't quite there - (but the Samsung did a pretty good job.)

black level/contrast is my main concern with Plasma.

I would say that the colors themselves on the Plasmas vs. LCDs weren't better per se, just different... I can't put my finger on it yet...

The glare of the plasma screens is of minor concern. Also, I was told that the half-life of the sets were about the same, and they both will get dimmer over time. Will the plasmas tend to go first?

Thanks again for your input.

I'm on my second week with the 40XBR1... and I'm very pleased with this panel. I have Comcast's cablecard plugged into the panel. This leaves the HDMI port open for a new DVD player, after a victor has been declared in the HD format war. I am currently running an old Sony (non progressive) DVD player thru the composite RCA pins. I am very pleased how well the XBR's 'chipset' processes the image.

I probably will never use the QAM tuner, but it is nice to know that it's there should I decide to downgrade to basic digital service without losing the local HD channels. I have read that plasma panels have a half life, but I was not aware of this for LCD's.

Be sure to watch the major 'brick & mortar' stores... The 32XBR1 could have been 'had' for the same price as the 37" Panny plasma just this last week. Good luck to ya' whatever you decide. I'm sure any of the three panels will serve you well.

Good Choice going with the Samsung. I was also going back and forth between the XBR and the new samsung. I chose the Samsung to replace my current Bravia , for the price i personally feel the Sammy can't be beat.

Yap I agree, I think the Sony is a little better but nothing noticably, if you can get a better price on a Samsung go for it. Personally I am buying the new Sony 46s2000 and the only reason I chose sony cause I can get that tv brand new for $2475
