I'm a novice when it comes to surround sound. I've had this Sony receiver for awhile and didn't even realize it had separate outputs for 5.1. This time around, I want to make sure I get things hooked up right. I will have a digital coax coming into the receiver from my dvd player. Then, the six 5.1 outputs on the receiver use RCA style connections, but all of my speakers (except subwoofer) are the standard +/- wire connections.

My question is, do I use digital coax leads for the 5.1 outputs and splice them to 18 gauge speaker wire to connect to the speakers? If not that, then what is correct?

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the response. The link doesn't work though.

If I'm sending an audio signal from my dvd player through digital coax to my receiver, and then using the normal spring clip speaker outputs, will I be able to get 5.1 DTS sound? Now, since this is an old receiver I'm not even sure if it's capable of decoding 5.1 DTS sound or not. It has a DTS logo on the front, but I'm not sure if that means that it decodes DTS or not.

Thanks for bearing with my ignorance on this!
