Sony SXRD rear projection (KDS-R60XBR2) vs Panasonic plasma (TH-58PX600)

I am torn between buying the soon to be released Sony 60" SXRD rear projection (KDS-R60XBR2) or the newly released Panasonic plasma (TH-58PX600). What I have learned, is that plasmas have a brighter (/better) image ... but on the other hand, they can get burnin. Maybe the the Sony projection will have a more comparable brightness with the new 180Watt bulbs. The Sony projection is 1080P, but the Panasonic plasma is not. Things to consider for projections are the angle viewing, depth of the unit, and having to replace the bulb every 5 years. Things to consider for plasmas, are the fact that most cannot display 1080P yet, power consumption, and obviously price. Which unit is the beset choice? Should I wait another year, for the rest of the plasmas to become 1080p?

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks,

Kevin

Find a store that has them setup well (for the Sony, look at one of their other SXRD models) and decide what you like best. My eyes prefer plasma, but many others like the SXRD. It's very subjective. Stand as far away as you plan to sit. That way you can judge if the higher resolution of the Sony is worth it. Note that the plasma has a far wider viewing angle.
I have a 60" XBR1 and could not be more pleased with the PQ. I, too, looked @ large plasmas but they were too reflective and I could see the SDE @ a viewing distance of 10'. I also could tell the difference between 720 and 1080 @ that distance. As for viewing angle, I have two chairs @ 55-60 degrees off center and do not get dimming or color shift when watching from either one. As for brightness, the SXRD is considerably brighter than plasmas. I run mine in reduced power mode (dimmer) and have no problems in a brightly lit room during the day. Plasma has approx. a 30% brightness loss in the first year. No loss on the SXRD until just before the bulb goes out. You are the one that has to decide which picture is more pleasing to you.

You are so full it!!! What kind of work do you do? I work for a major television network posting shows and almost any idiot can see the difference between 720p and 1080p. So I guess you aren't just any idiot!
I just love you two! :p :p

audiomixer, you know better. ;)
Having seen the 58" panny firsthand I am of the opinion that it isn't as good for pq as the A-2000 sxrd or last year's XBR-1. If you need torch brightness that will deteriorate in a year or two or absolutely must hang it on a wall or watch from extreme off-angle, the plasma would be a better choice.

While I normally agree that the difference between 720p and 1080p is pretty much irrelevant at these screen sizes on lcos or dlp sets, lcd projection and plasma are a different matter as they do have screen door effect which becomes more obvious at larger screen sizes and lower pixel counts.

58" is just to big a screen size for a 720p set that has screen door effect as a plasma does.

OK for lcos or dlp 720p sets which don't have the grid pattern.
