The 1.18C firmware upgrade is now available from the SONY site. Does anyone know exactly what changes are in this upgrade?

Untill now I can't find anything in the menu's.

The firmaware states clearly 1.18C (some sources on internet states 1.10C).

I installed it yesterday with a friend of mine.

On stereo music the soundstage became more loose and the bas guitars were way more natural, it looks like also the soundstage has a bit more depth.

On DTS we noticed a big improvement on the seal soundtrack, the voice was WAY more in your face.

Keep on going to 2.00C !!!

Nice work Sony.

Before people get telling digital is digital and a firmware can't make it better, please don't.

It is definately 1.18C (press the "autoformat" button, and then turn the +/- or "function" know counter clockwise, and you will see the firmware version; i.e., 1.18c).

It is indeed MUCH better; more of a tube sound, more of a sweet, clear, natural sound; with greater clarity on all center channel dialogue.

BTW, I tried to email and call SONY to find out what the upgrade included, and the only thing they said was that it corrected the 1 way/2 way remote problem, and the "lipsync" problem. I pointed out that these were the corrections already made on 1.08 and at the most, 1.10 versions; that their info was outdated. They didn't deny this; and admitted not really knowing WHAT this new version really contains. Anyway, I agree, that it is a VAST improvement, with better sound in all fields. ....even my wife noticed it!!!!.....

Slightly off-topic (but not much),

How do you guys like the TA-E9000ES? I am strongly considering buying the unit soon, and the only thing holding me back is the lack of 6 channel analog inputs (for DVD-Audio or SACD input later).

How hard is it to upgrade the "firmware" that you are discussing? Is it just a download and an "install" (yes, I'm a software engineer, not an audiophile). http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks!

Chris,

Your point is well taken. Customer support acts in the guise of tech support; the latter aren't reachable by ANY means. I have already emailed SONY, and telephoned both their customer support center (800-222-7669), and their "VIP Hotline" (201-930-1000), requesting the content of the 1.18c changes. Hope that others will do the same!

In any case, the upgrade is truly superb, and I too would recommend the 9000 to anyone. The firmware upgradability is easy, and its a superb feature. As noted, the sound of the unit with 1.18c is VASTLY improved.

A site to check out the 9000 as well as other user comments on other components, is:
