It looks like Sony is shipping a "consumer" HTPC.

These MX series combine a PVR, DVD-RW, MiniDisc, and FM tuner. Presumably, you can add MP3.


Sony is positioning this as a "home audio and video server". If they put a nice (and remote controllable) user interface on top of the functionality, they might have a hit.


Of course, for those people who are building their own HTPC's this machine is probably too constrained (and axpensive), but for the average consumer, it might be very attractive.

As usual way to overpriced-guess half the price goes to the Sony name. Simens has put out a similar machine- the Multitainer for about 600$.

Somebody please hand me the smelling salts, I am feeling faint. $2,800 for the starter model? Maybe some of the more experienced members of this board should start building and selling their own...

Note that the machine has a DVD writer included.


Sony has a similar machine I bought for $1799 at Micro Center a couple of weeks ago. I had to add an ATI All In Wonder card. This machine also included the DVD writer.
