Sony VPL-VW325ES - Throw Distance

4343 Views 9 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  askeptic
Hello,

I am finally pulling the trigger on a home theater in my basement. Both integrators I had provide me prices have recommended going with the Sony VPL-VW325ES projector, but are trying to sell me a 110" screen.

I would love to jump up to a 130" screen if possible and have measured so many times to ensure it falls with in Sony's spec in regards to the minimum throw distance. Long story short, after factoring in the finished walls, projectors depth and mounting location, I am precisely at the minimal throw distance for a 130" screen. This is with the units back basically toughing the wall. (In my case, while the room is 26' long, there is a bulk head that sits in the way causing me to have to place the projector this close)

My question is, would it work out just fine being so close to the minimum throw distance, possibly 1 - 2 " too close for the screen, or should I step down to a 120" and give myself a lot more room to play? If the projector ends up being a little too close, would that simply mean a smaller picture on the screen by a few millimeters? I personally rather than a few mm less than to step down and have 10" less. but am worried about it sitting on the minimums.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

What is the ceiling height and bulkhead height? This tool might help:

but check the data with the owners manual. In any event, you can see how image size varies with distance.

Thank you. Using the calculator, the rear of the projector will need to be ~3/4 inch off the bulkhead to reach the minimum throw required for a 130".

The ceilings are 9 foot and the bulk head runs 14 inches down from the ceiling once drywall is up.

You could feed the cables and power through the bulkhead to minimize the clearance needed or even provide an opening through the bulkhead to allow the lens to project through it.

You could ceiling mount the projector just behind and below the bulkhead, and use the vertical lens shift, as need to fit the image to the screen. Even if the projector's lower edge is 18in from the ceiling it will still clear the floor by ~7.5ft

You did not address something that will be very important and that is actual gain of the screen fabric. Even if you can throw that size, you may not want to, due to lack of brightness. What screen fabric are you looking at?

Hi, good point. The screen is slated to be a Stewart 4K filmscreen studiotek THX Microperf

Size and aspect ratio? How much space between the face of the speakers and the back of the screen?

I am hoping for a 130", but 120" at a minimum. Speaker face to back of screen will be ~1.3 inches.

Did not answer all the questions, but I assume you are talking diagonal, not width and you are talking 16:9 aspect ratio. With 130" diagonal 16:9 and ST130 microperf, you are looking at a maximum brightness of 27/28FL. 30FL and above would be a better starting point. Are you able to give 6" or more between the speakers and the screen? I think 120" to 125" diagonal would be a better choice.

Thank you! My apologies for missing some of those questions. You are correct, 130" diagonal (~113" wide). Also yes, 16:9 aspect ratio.

If I drop to a 120-125" screen, I would be able to get the 6 inches in between the screen and LCR speakers that sounds like is needed.

While I wish I could pull off a 130", sounds like my best bet is to go for a 120-125" for optimal performance.

Thank you!
