I have been researching here and at some local stores this new generations of tv's. My last major HT tv purchase was a 60" plasma back in 2012. Much in the game has changed since. Cannot watch the plasma without shutting all shades in my family room that is set up with a dolby atmos system. I am looking to upgrade that plasma to a 75" LCD. I believe that it would be best to get a unit with FALD and VA panel for better wide angle viewing. This tv will be set up in a corner so most seating spots should not be affected being on an angle, especially the 2 main front recliners straight ahead at 12' away.

I have had my eye on both Sony's for a while now, the older 900f and the 950g. Also in this mid tier range I have been impressed with the Samsung Q80. While in stores I have been directed towards the LG 9070 when it was sensed by the salesperson that I wanted a better discount. Finally, whenever I would mention the TCL 75r617, I would get an immediate negative reaction from the salesperson. They would pretty much bash it altogether in every which way possible. What I don't get is that particular tv gets mostly positive reviews and was even compared glowingly to the Sony 950g in where the reviewer from Digital Trends said that the TCL had 95% performance of the Sony.

So all things considered which of these units would be a good buy?

Wait for the TCL 8 series mini led in 75" to hit the streets this fall in US. If they did it right it should blow away the TVs mentioned. Also TCL upgraded the 6 series with a new 75" that should be available in 2-3 weeks I believe.
And please do not believe salesman who are looking to do more than put money in their pockets.. Research and buy what you want!!

Thanks for the advice. Perhaps I will have to be a little more patient.
Is mini LED similar to Micro Led?

Mini led is the next step as the technology/manufacturing/etc. for micro led is just not there yet and probably won't be for 2-3 years..

If you want a super nice led (best in my estimation to date), get a Sony 75X940E off Amazon while they last. Video and Audio Center is the only place they exist now on Amazon and for the price it's a steal... Super nice build and a picture that amazes me everyday. I've had mine for 17 months now and am very happy with it.

I know, I forgot about that TV. I saw it when I was first researching. Is it that good? Please review some of the basics. I will search AVS forums.

Would you say it is better than the 900f or 950G?

While looking up the 940e I found some complaints about motion. I hope that may have been fixed with firmware updates. Also anyone know if it is a VA panel?
Firmware updates would not fix the complaints about motion. The panel itself is a bit slow, albeit most people do not have an issue. It is a VA panel.

Yes it's a VA panel.. You won't have the time to go all the way through the 940E thread but I will tell you that the motion complaints are blown out of proportion... rtings.com gave it rave reviews in all areas but they dinged it in the motion area. That's where it all started. I would say that 98% of the folks in the 940E thread have no problems with motion. Sony has never made a Led TV with the build quality/picture quality of the set and have not made another one since.
2 of the 4 HDMI inputs are full bandwidth / Dolby Vision / HDR10.. The blacks are black and colors are rich. It's lacking eARC but that's not a big deal for me. I bought a Sony DH790 ATMOS receiver about a month ago and feed it my ATV4K, Sony X700 BD player, and my Dish Hopper. I do not use the TV builtin apps. It is a weighty TV due to it's build quality.

I get it and definitely agree with your take on salespeople.
What is your take in comparing the above listed tv's that I am interested in.
Thanks
I could make a case for any one of them. Everyone has a different set of personal preferences and priorities so it really depends on what's most important to you. For example, if cost is a primary issue the TCL is probably the sweet spot for best performance on a lower budget. But some folks will find reasons to be willing to pay more for another model.

Thank you. I think that I am leaning 900f
The 900F has like 60 FALD zones where the 940E has 256.. Obviously it's your money but I personally wouldn't go there...
Gerry
I know that the 940e has more zones, but I have read here on the forums that the biggest concern has been motion handling, and they have been returned for that. And in some cases for the 900f and they have been happy with it's improvement.

Honestly, unless you are super-critical and have OCD, I think you'd be happy with any one of those sets, be it a 900F, 940E, or R617. The differences among these sets are quite frankly not that big. Keep in mind that many people in this forum are enthusiasts that analyze this stuff to death and tend to magnify the differences.

A better question to ask is what will constitute most of your TV watching? Sports? Movies? Dark room mostly? Or mostly with the lights on?

To answer your question. My preferences are Movies and Sports on DirecTV DVD's and BluRay in a large family room with windows that made my 2012 60" plasma suffer without the blinds closed.

What percentage movies, and what percentage sports?

My Sony Z9D would beg to differ on that......;)
