I find Sopranos very dark (and I don't mean emotionally), much like The Godfather. Does anyone else?

I turn up the brightness to bring out the background sometimes. it seems alittle dark, to me too. IF I understand what you mean.
Looks normal to me.
Kipp,

Not sure what "normal" would be like to someone from a place called Downers Grove! Sounds like what they call Washington Square in NY when the meth dries up.

(Just kidding. I couldn't resist.)
Just to clarify it seems in teh normal range.. but sometimes I need to tweak it. But maybe I am being to picky.
I agree. It seems very dark this year. I have found myself pushing the Brightness control up on my Sampo to 115 or 128 (normally in the 35-95 range, depending on resolution and channel) to enjoy the show, something I never had to do before.

A man with the last name of Downer founded the town way back when. There are many groves here. There are also a few members from Downers Grove on the forum.
It is sometimes a bit dark. However, the purist in me cringes when I hear people 'tweaking' the brightness. If the system is correctly calibrated, it's correctly calibrated, and you are seeing it as it was intended.
A minor adjustment of 1 to 3 ticks out of 200 is likely not something to cringe over. And probably does affect the intended presentation of the show. But then my display has never been professionally calibrated. just be me and one of those dvd discs So it is likely off. But the point is, it is better to view it in a fashion that pleases oneself... tweaked, untweaked

And I Am not sure all transfers are created equal .. (the sopranos seem very good tho.) sometimes a nudge here or there is needed.
It is definitely a little dark. I'm beginning to think it's a deficiency with the HD cameras more than the directors preference.

The Sopranos is shot on film.
The thought occurred to me about 2 minutes after posting ;)
The Sopranos looked just perfect on my calibrated Pioneer 50" plasma.
Jerry -- I'm suprised at your remark because even the best plasmas have lower black level than CRT (front/rear/direct) based systems. I would expect those with lcd/dlp/plasma technology to notice this the most...

Another thought, could the different carriers be effecting the signal somehow? Maybe there is a difference between TimeWarner, Dish, DirectTV etc?
My original comment was about Sopranos on DirectTV HD.

What you say about the black level on plasmas is true. Allowing for this and taking into account the plasma's excellence in just about every other area of the picture, the Sopranos looked fine to me.
Sopranos looked great on my uncalibrated sharp xv9000. But I admit I did not have hdtv last year to compare.

It's definately the Director's intent for the darkness to be as it is. I think it may be more so this year because it seems to be much darker content-wise this year. And that's saying a lot for the Sopranos!

Yes, I agree, it likely is intent.

I wonder does the show look as dark on the analog side, maybe they don't realize how dark it i s in hd. IF there is a difference I imagine it is done with a eye to sd presentation, As this is the overwhelming majority of the audience.

anyway sometimes I have to give it a minor ( as in teh other people watching don't know what I have done, other then they know something has been adjusted as the osd comes up) adjustment, but I certainly wouldn't want them to change it, I like it

just curious black level of plasmas being lower, does that mean that things aren't as black as they are on crts?
