Just a little question, i have a pioneer VSXD-409 and i wanted to know if heat can cause the amp to cut off.

I have sound cut offs and i was wondering if that was because of the heat.

How long until it cuts off for the first time?

How long does it take until it comes back on?

Then, how long until it cuts out again?

To answer your question, yes; however, that is not the only reason this can happen...thus my questions.

That's the thing, i really can't tell how long it's gonna take to cut off, it seems to be randomly.

And this only seems to happen with the digital connection.

Never have this happen with analog connections... although i pretty much never use them.

What do you mean "with the digital connections"? You mean with sources that happen to be connected by digital cables (coax or optical)? You're not suggesting it happens only when something digital is plugged in and doesn't when it's unplugged.

OK, it happens randomly. Randomly every few seconds? Minutes? Hours? You can play it for an hour and it happens and then happens an hour later? What's the order of magnitude of the random time here?

Yeah, i have my satellite receiver connected to my amp via a coax digital.

As for the randomness i really can't tell anything besides random.

It can work for hours without a hitch and then start or it just starts doing it...

Without more specific information (more than "just starts doing it" ... like when it just starts doing it does the outage last for days, hours, minutes, are the intervals in days, hours, minutes) I'd have to default to heat...meaning move your receiver/integrated amp or better ventilate it. You can discount heat if, when it goes out, can you switch to an analog source and hear the sound or is the whole thing off. To eliminate digital, remove the digital from your sat receiver and run on analog for a week and see if the problem still occurs.

I bet you're using a digital satellite receiver when you get the

sound cutouts. I bet that you are experiencing a defect in the receiver,

it's wiring the lnb in the dish, a distribution amplifier, etc. I've had

exactly the same problem in the past with my dss and it was solved by

swapping the distribution amp.

Well, I'm sorry to see someone else with the same problem.

I have a Harman/Kardon AVR 500. I posted a message before I saw your msg.

My problem is also with the digital inputs, in my case optical. I've swapped out the receiver and still have the same problem. I've noticed that the problem shows itself more with some DVDs than others. Lost In Space is terrible; it exhibits the problem a lot. It seems as if the power off button is being pressed on the remote. The problem does not occurr when the analog inputs are used on the same DVD. Could there be some signal in the data stream that just shuts the receiver down?

Best of luck. I'm considering dumping the H/K and getting a Yamaha. Any other susgestions for a receiver?

Can you please develop your reply Ross???

Yes Im using a digital satellite receiver (Star Choice, www.starchoice.ca ).

It has a coax for digital output and i'm using it to connect it to my pioneer VSX-D409 DD/DTS amp.

My thoughts on it are:

The heat generated by the amp, I have it in my TV stand which was a closed one and i pretty much made holes one the back so it could refresh.

The other cause could be maybe a bad reception of the sound and the amp just cuts it...

It seems that Starchoice broadcasts in DD.
