Sony DH500 connected to a SA8300HD with digital audio cable. Pretty new receiver and now certain commercials and even some channels I get no sound. The SA8300 is outputting because I can always switch the Sony to TV output and get (two channel) sound. Is the receiver bad?

I'm not familiar with either product you own but my guess is that it's a processing problem. What does your Sony indicate for number of audio channels on the TV channels you can hear?

I would start trying different surround modes on the Sony receiver. It should be set to DPL II as a default for television, assuming you have a full surround system, this will allow DD processing on the channels that broadcast it and DPL II processing on the ones that are stereo.

I do have the Sony set to DPL 11 and it works fine for just about all of programming I've been watching. But, I noticed SOME commercials have no sound. Then last night I noticed that a complete channel had no sound. I cycled through all the Sony's sound set-ups with no luck. Checked again this AM. Every channel but that one works and again I can get the sound if I use the input from the TV to the Sony so I know the channel is broadcasting sound

The sound system is 5.1 but I don't have rear speakers.

Yes, the STB has an RCA connection to the TV (TV sound turned off) and a coaxial digital cable to the Sony. Also an RCA connection from the TV out to the Sony.

Could be the STB, but I doubt it since the lack of sound is so very limited. I did try a reboot of the STB in any event with no luck.

DO you have the STB hooke dup 2 difference ways. For example: toslink to the Sony receiver and RCA to the TV? If that is the case I think it would have to be something wrong with the STB.
