Hi,

I have been stalking these forums for awhile trying to pickup as much info as possible because I knew one day I would have the chance to have my own dedicated HT.

The time is now upon me and its time for decisions, but I need a little more guidance...

Firstly a little info, I live in Australia so most of my measurements will be stated in metric and secondly not all the products available to you guys in the US will be readily available here (ie: green glue, arrrg).

Now my question:

The room I have to work with is about 4m(W) x 5m(L) on the ground floor in the front of the house. Only adjoining rooms are dining room (same floor) and master bedroom (room above LINK

- 10mm normal Gyprock (I haven’t told the contractor about this yet, but I think it will be a good idea. What do you think?)

As far as the ceiling probably same as walls (minus the double brick) but I might double stud (decouple) it because of the bedroom upstairs.

The floor? well I am not that fussed as the house is not built on an old aboriginal burial ground (I hope) so no one much to bother down there, it will just be carpeted.

Anyway any help on the above would be great.

Thanks

Ivan.

How high is the ceiling? Could you possibly do the room-within-a-room thing? Height permitting, you could free-stand the ceiling joists to resist sound transmission to the bedroom. Just wondering.

if you make a cavity-wall (brick- airspacew/studs-drywall), make the cavity as deep as feasible, fill it with insulation, and put as much mass on the studs as you can.

what advantage are you seeking by using one layer of 10mm drywall?

Maybe he's looking to prevent resonance between the drywall layers? I know a lot of people here are using 5/16th and 1/4 inch sandwiches in order to reduce resonance and expense.

hi fellas, that link has a couple of graphs illustrating the effect of using different thicknesses to control resonance... or lack of effect as the case may be. if you are considering utilizing 1/2" drywall with 5/8", the change will be small (Relative to 2 layers of 5/8")

but to sacrifice a large amount of mass - i.e., by switching to 1/4" - might not be wise. you won't stop resonance problems, and you WILL lose mass (and with it low frequency performance).

just a couple of pennies for th table,

take care
