Sound Level meter buying considerations

1216 Views 17 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Mikazaru
I am shopping around for a sound level meter to do a frequency response of my home theatre. I decided to check on eBay as in western Canada we do not have radioshacks anymore, they were bought by Circuit City, so I can't buy the RS SLM.

I found this: http://cgi.ebay.ca/NEW-7-Range-Sound...QQcmdZViewItem

Its a generic SLM coming direct from Hong Kong.

My question is: Is there a great deal of variety in quality of sound level meters? Is this one going to provide me with severely inaccurate measurements, or will it do the job? Should I opt for the RS one, and if so, where do I buy one?

If you are truely doing a freq response then you need a calibrated mic or SPL meter. If all you are doing is level setting or looking for rough peaks/nulls at base freqs then you will likely be ok. The advantage of the RS unit is that there is a calibration file (not specific to the unit but specific to at least the model #) for the RS unit. Again for base freqs this is likely good enough. But at higher freq's the RS unit is not all that acurate either and you are back to needing a calibarted more expensive unit if you want accurate measurements.
For the RS meter, is there a calibration file for both the analogue and digital versions, or are there no differences between the mic in both of these models? And where can I DL this file?
So you can't even buy from RS online?
no in Canada radio shack went bankrupt and all stores are now called the source by circuit city. The only way to get a spl meter is on ebay or used for a Canadian. I bought one a few weeks ago on ebay.

If you really want an RS meter badly, I'd buy one for you and ship it up. Of course, I'd need to get a money order or personal check (allow time for clearing) up front. Wouldn't charge a dime more than what it cost me for the meter/shipping/tax...

PM if interested.

I'm serious; no BS, no games.

But, there must be an easier way....

If all you are interested in is relative levels, then just about any SPL meter should get you that.

Do you know HTGuide Forum? That board seems to be frequented by quite a number of Canadians. Surely someone there could lead you to water.

I've never gone online in Canada.

When you click Here , what do you get?

If you get to RS will they not ship to you. Do you know someone in the US who you could get it through?

BTW: I just clicked on it and RS is out of stock. :(
Stupid question? Can't you buy a Radio Shack SPL meter online? I always thought you could? J.H.
dm: thanks for the link. appreciated!

whoaru99: I greatly appreciate the gesture! I am currently exploring eBay for a meter and I'll see how that goes. If it falls through, I'll contact you.

Cyrano: the RS link you gave me works, but the problem is that they only ship to U.S. addresses. They assume if you live in Canada you'll be buying from radioshack.ca, which is shut down now.

J.H: Radioshack.com doesnt ship to Canada, and radioshack.ca is dead. The only place you can get it online is eBay, which I'm trying now.
Sorry about that. That really does suck. I hope you find one though they are lifesavers. J.H.
Good luck Ventro. Sorry the US RS won't sell to Canada. I just tweaked my HT with the Analog version and it is amazing how much better it does than my ears can do. :)

You have a PM.

BTW: I see whoru99 already offered to help ship one to you. I hadn't read the new previous posts yet. Sounds like you'll be okay. You'll be glad to get one. They really do help.
If you happen to be in the market for an SVS Subwoofer, they have an option to ship em with the Rat Shack SPL meter (;
Spend some time in the Setup forum to determine what you need in terms of SPL meters and frequency response software. They're experts in there.

I don't think you have to buy a subwoofer to order the SPL meter from SVS, as this is exactly what I did just last week.

Ventro if you can't find the meter on Ebay or aren't comfortable having other members send one to you, buying from SVS is definitely a viable option.

Good luck,

Here's the page where the SPL meter appears on the SVS site.

Actually, Radioshack has set up shop in Canada again. The design of the store is nicer and more open. There are 2 in Calgary (one in Deerfoot Mall, the other is on Macleod Trail I think). However, they did not have an SPL meter when I went (the salesman didn't even know what it was). He did say that since they only recently opened, that there would be a lot more stock arriving.
