Hi,

I want to use my HTPC to replace my preamp, so recently i hooked it up to my amp (homemade thingy, nothing fancy), and played around with the Windows volume controls,

as it turns out, turn the volume all the way down means still a pretty strong signal to the amp resulting in very audible music coming from the speakers.

i'm using the onbiard audie of my nforce2 motherboard, i'm planning to upgrade to a M-Audio Revolution, but i'm a little hesistant about it now.

anyone with a revo notices the same?

many thanks

In lame terms the logic in Windows is that 100% volume means 0dB signal attenuation. Further down it gets into negative decibels, but as you have noticed even some huge number of negative decibels that corresponds to windows 0.01% signal level with some adequate amplification still can be audible.
