From designs found at HTforum.com (great people over there) my next project is a huge undertaking - full range 3-way speaker called "Statement"

It uses a WMTMW configuration, with:

2 Dayton RS225-8 8" woofers

2 Tang band W41337 4" midrange drivers

1 Fountek NeoCD3.0 Ribbon tweeter.

The cabinet is bottom ported, 100 liters tuned to 24Hz, for an F3 of 30Hz, and F10 of 20Hz. The mids are a quasi "transmission line" or open back design. tweets are sealed.

Crossovers points are 350Hz and 3700Hz.

Started out getting 3 sheets of 3/4" MDF and one sheet of 1/2" MDF cut into rough pieces at home depot, then I do all the measuring and precision cuts myself:

Glueing the first baffle together: (each is 1 1/4" thick)

the "mid tunnels" 2 of which go into each cabinet:

start practicing the mounting hole cutouts on a test piece! that way if (when) you make a mistake you havent ruined a main workpiece:

The front baffles - all drivers are flush mount, and each of the mid drivers and woofers get the backs of the baffle scalloped as much as possible to let them "breath"

Closup of the scalloped edges:

First cabinet starts to come together:

The crossovers assembled and soldered using Cardas Quad Eutectic silver solder and QED Silver anniversary (silver coated OFC) wiring in the internals. wires to the mids and tweets are QED silver, and to the woofer simple 12 gauge copper cable.

Top is the woofer circuit, below is the tweeter:

and the mids:

Hook em up to test:

Cabinets coming together and lined with 2" wedge foam to address internal standing waves.

The end of the process is surprisingly when I fell off the wagon regarding ducumentation, I refined the interior lining and added some more, and the crossovers mounted, niether of which I shot...

and they're done! Except for veneer. I'm going to wait a bit to veneer them, as I'm also going to build a matching center, and I want to finish them all at the same time to keep them 100% matching.

Daddy build speakers!

Them together

And them in their (temporary) listening position

I got these completed July 24th. they need some good run in before I do any real critical listening and "judging" but right away - the sound from these is absolutely amazing. So clean and clear, deep bass, ultra detailed and clean mids and high extended treble.

After about 20 hours of run in I can easily say these are the best speakers I've heard. the room is terrible, I havent messed with positioning at all but I can just sit and listen hour after hour. no sub on either. thats just for HT now... (untill I build my infinate baffle - but thats a story for another day!)

What kind of finish are you thinking of? Have you thought of a grille?

Oh, you can also modify the port design if you want the speaker shorter. For example, rear ported.

I'm going to veneer them for sure, not sure with what... probably a stained figured maple. I've always liked that look.

I may add a grill in the future but these speakers are voiced without a grill so it will, to some degree, effect performance. and they're going to be in a dedicated listening room, not a living room so it may be unnessesary

Yes you can rear port, but you need to keep aproximately 100 liters internal volume, and the front baffle needs to be the same width, and I'd hesitate before changing the mid-tube length...

Great Job, I've been fascinated by the statements. Are you doing the horizontal center or a third vertical to tuck behind an AT screen?

Thanks!

I'm going to do the horizontal center. may be a while before I get started on it tho...

as for cost, prices have changed a bit, and I've had to outlay a little more since I'm in Canada, but all drivers and crossover components cost me about $1250, with wood and glue etc coming in at around $150.

Just for those here that haven't spent any time over on HTguide forum there are a Bill of Materials and cabinet plans well documented in the original thread. There are other similarly documented speaker designs for consideration.
