I recently started using the Hercules Fortissimo II. I used to optical spdif out to connect my HTPC to my Harmon Kardon AVR 300 receiver, and was really disappointed by the quality of the sound. When using PowerDVD, the pass though works great, and my receiver detects DTS or DD, and so on. But when playing DivX movies, SVCD's and MP3's, the sound quality is really bad. I had much better results with just a Sound Blaster Live using analog stereo outputs. Also, my receiver does not recognize AC3 encoded DivX movies as being in surround sound. It treats the audio as if it were only in stereo. I've installed the AC3 codec in Windows (98SE) along with the latest DivX software, but neither made a difference.

Is it the sound card, the receiver, or something else? Anyone ever run into anything like this? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Erick
