I just ordered a Yamaha HTR 5540 Receiver, and I have a MOBO that supports 5.1 channel surround. I have an SPDIF out on the PC, but I am unclear as to what kind of cable I need to buy in order to get surround to work from my PC to the receiver.

Can someone help?

According to the manual SPDIF requires an MSI "S" bracket, which is listed as optional. If you do in fact have the "S" bracket then it has both optical (Toslink) and coax (standard RCA type jack) on the bracket. You can use whichever type your receiver has connections for.
